Yuzuru Hanyu Wiki/Bio
Yuzuru Hanyu was born in Sendai, Miyagi, Japan, on December 7, 1994. He has asthma and has to take several breaks after completing his programs to catch his breath. Saya, his older sister, was the one who encouraged him to start skating when he was four years old. Takeshi Honda and Shizuka Arakawa, two prominent Japanese figure skaters, are among the alumni of Tohoku High School, where he attended as a child.
Hanyu attended Nanakita Elementary School and Nanakita Junior High School. Hanyu graduated from Tohoku High School in 2013 and enrolled in Waseda University’s e-school program in Human Information Science. From his training base in Canada, he went to the academy. His graduation thesis, which was announced in August 2020, summarises how 3D motion capture technology could be used in figure skating, with a focus on its ability to use in judging.
He recorded and analyzed his movement while doing the triple Axel jump off-ice as part of his testing, which he hopes would be used to develop athlete skills and AI judging. He received his diploma in September 2020, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Japan, he was unable to attend the ceremony.
Career
Yuzuru Hanyu made his national debut as a novice skater at the ‘2004 Japan Novice Championships,’ where he captured the gold medal in the Novice B division. Around this time, he started practising with Nanami Abe, but he was unable to put in adequate preparation time due to the closure of his home rink in Sendai due to financial difficulties. He qualified for the ‘2006 Japan Junior Championships’ after winning bronze in the Novice A division at the ‘2006 Japan Novice Championships.’ He placed 7th at the ‘2006–07 Japan Junior Championships.’ Following the reopening of his home rink in 2007, he won a gold medal in the Novice A division at the ‘2007 Japan Novice Championships,’ followed by a bronze medal at the ‘2007–08 Japan Junior Championships.’
He made his junior international debut at the ‘2008–09 ISU Junior Grand Prix,’ where he placed fifth overall and sixth in the short program and fourth in the free skate, respectively. Later that season, he won the ‘Japan Junior Championship’ (at the age of 13) and qualified for the senior level at the ‘2008–09 Japan Championships,’ where he placed eighth.
In April 2012, he started working with Canadian coach Brian Orser and won gold at the ‘2012 Finlandia Trophy,’ silver at the ‘2012 Skate America,’ and gold at the ‘2012 NHK Trophy.’ After finishing second in the ‘Grand Prix Final’ and winning his first national title at the ‘Japan Championships,’ he went on to win silver at the ‘2013 Four Continents Championships,’ and fourth place at the ‘2013 World Championships.’
After winning gold at the ‘2013 Finlandia Trophy,’ he secured a place in the ‘Grand Prix Final,’ which he took, thanks to two silvers at the ‘2013 Skate Canada International’ and ‘2013 Trophée Éric Bompard.’ He earned Japan’s first Olympic gold medal in men’s figure skating at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics. He won the 2014 World Figure Skating Championships in Saitama, Japan, to round out the year.
During the 2015–16 season, he claimed his fourth consecutive Japan Championships title and, after missing two months due to injury, placed second at the 2016 World Championships. He defended his Grand Prix Final title and regained his World Championships title in the 2016-17 season, becoming the first skater in history to perform a quadruple loop in the process. He had an injury-plagued season in 2017–18, which took him off the ice for two months and limited him to just three events. He did, however, successfully defend his Olympic title at the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics, an achievement not accomplished since Dick Button’s back-to-back championships in 1948 and 1952.
