Yolanda Adams Wiki/Bio
Yolanda Adams was born on 27 August 1961, in the city of Houston in the state of Texas, United States. In 1979, she graduated from Houston’s Sterling High School. She started her career as a schoolteacher and part-time model in Houston after graduating from Texas Southern University. She then stopped teaching to pursue a career as a lead singer full-time.
From 1987 to 1990, Adams was married to Troy Mason. The justification for their split, according to Adams, was spousal violence. Adams married Tim Crawford, a former NFL player, in 1997. After seven years of marriage, the pair divorced in August 2004. Taylor Adams Crawford, Adams and Crawford’s daughter, was born in 2001.
Career
As a lead singer for Houston’s Southeast Inspirational Choir associated with the Church of God in Christ, under the leadership of Carl Preacher, Brenda Waters, and Shirley Joiner, Adams first caught the ear of Thomas Whitfield and Sound of Gospel Records. In 1982, she was the featured vocalist on the choir’s song “For My Liberty.” With a performance titled “My Confidence Lies in You,” Adams was featured on the Edwin Hawkins Music and Arts Seminar Choir’s release Give Us Peace in 1986.
She later signed a recording deal with Sound of Gospel, and her first album, Just As I Am, was released in 1987. Ben Tankard, a producer and keyboardist, discovered her in 1990 and signed her to his indie label Tribute Records, where she released During The Storm. During this time, Tankard’s target with Tribute Records was to build an audience for a smoother gospel/jazz sound. On his 1994 release Play Me in Your Key, he featured Adams’ vocals on his album and concept video track “You Bring Out The Best in Me.” Gospel, jazz, and “quiet storm” styles all responded positively to the partnership.
Save the World, Adams’ next album, was released a year later and included her first signature tune, “The Fight Is The Lord’s.” More Than a Melody, released in 1995, featured more Tankard production work as well as contributions from O’Landa Draper and BeBe Winans. From that song, the track “Gotta Have You,” which featured Tony Terry on background vocals, became her first single and music video.
The next year, she released Yolanda… Live in Washington, which included covers of songs from her first three albums. The footage from this recording was first released as two separate VHS tapes, and then as a single DVD and CD package. Around this time, the parent company of Tribute Records, Diadem Music Group, merged with Benson Music Group, which was ultimately purchased by Zomba/Verity Records in New York.
Songs from the Heart was her last Verity Records album, and it included “Just Believe,” which was a hit on contemporary radio. “Still I Rise,” a dedication to Rosa Parks inspired by Maya Angelou’s poem of the same name, was also included on the record.
