Gloria Estefan

Singer/songwriter Gloria Estefan is perhaps the most successful crossover artist in the history of Latin music with sales of more than 100 million albums and more than three dozen singles and numerous awards. Her achievements were started in 1984 with the release of the European smash club “Dr. Beat” both solo and with Miami Sound Machine, co-led by the producer and multi-instrumentalistic husband Emilio Estefan, Jr. In 1985, she scored with “Conga” at home and in 1987 “The rhythm is going to get you.” Estefan jams wed Miami slick to polyrhythms from her native Cuba.

Her platinum albums, including Destiny in 1996, did the same thing. Her run continued throughout the 21st century with the Alma Caribeña multi-platinum and the 90 Millas gold-certified in 2007. Standards of 2013, their final outing, registered at 20 on the Top 200 before a long recording break. The first couple to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom were philanthropists and humanitarians, and Gloria was the first Cuban-American singers/songwriters to be honoured at the Kennedy Centre. The couple were awarded the Gershwin Popular Song Prize by the Congress Library. A Broadway musical nominated by Tony, On Your Feet, is based on their lives and music.

Born on 1 September 1957 in Havana, Glory of Fajardo, Estefan grew up primarily in Miami, Florida, after her dad’s bodyguard of Cuban President Fulgencio Batista was forced to flee the island after Fidel Castro’s coup in 1959. In 1975 Fajardo auditioned for the Miami Latin Boys and her cousin Merci Murciano, a local marriage group led by Emilio Estefan Jr. The group was re-christened Miami Sound Machine after they were hired. The weds were Fajardo and Estefan four years later. When Miami Sound Machine began composing its own original material, its pop, disc and salsa fusion was earned a dedicated locale, and the group published its first Spanish LP on CBS International in 1979. Despite a growing Latino fan base, they only reached non-Latin audiences until 1984 with the single “Dr. Beat.”

Career

Primitive Love, issued in 1985, marked the first english effort of Miami Sound Machine. Three top ten pop hits were reported in the US with the infectious “Conga,” “Bad Boy” and “Words Get In Way” alone. The group was charged as Gloria Estefan & Miami Sound Machine in 1988’s triple platinum Let It Loose, and was awarded four Top 10 hits — “Rhythm Is Gonna Get You,” “Can’t Stay Away from You,” “Anything for You” and “1-2-4.”Standards of 2013, their final outing, registered at 20 on the Top 200 before a long recording break. The first couple to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom were philanthropists and humanitarians, and Gloria was the first Cuban-American singers/songwriters to be honoured at the Kennedy Centre.

The 1989 Cuts Both Ways were credited alone to Estefan and generated her second hit, “Don’t Wanna Lose You.”  Emilio Estefan and the son of the couple were wounded, but all of them recovered from the crash. In 1991, Estefan resurfaced with Into the Light topping the charts again with “Coming Out of the Dark,” a single that was inspires by its near-fatal accident, and two more album clips, “Can’t Forget You” and “Live for Loving You,” secured her foothold in contemporary adult charts.

Following her 1994 covers from the Hold Me Thrill Me Kiss Me collection, she recalled her dance-pop origins with a performance of the classic Vicki Sue Robinson disco “Turn the Beat Around.” Another Spanish effort, Abriendo Puertas, also won the Grammy. Destiny was given the name “Reach,” the official theme of the 1996 Olympic Summer Games. Due to the efforts of acts like Ricky Martin and Enrique Iglesias, Latin Pop made new commercial advances. Estefan reigned as the most successful crossover artist in Latin music history with international record sales near 50 million marks. In 1999, she made her feature film debut in Music of the Heart, alongside Meryl Streep, and recorded the movie title track as a * NSYNC duet, scoring both a huge pop hit and an Oscar nomination.
