Career

The group started as ‘Fat City,’ Bill Danoff and Taffy Nivert’s husband and wife duo. The band included Jon Carroll (keyboards, vocals) and Margot Chapman (vocals). After the meeting, Carroll and Chapman were married as members of the group, but later divorced. Ben Carroll’s son is also a musician.

The group’s first album was the Starland Vocal Band, with Afternoon Delight as part of it. The track was #1 and the album was charted as well. The group won four Grammy Awards and two Best (voices) and Best New Artist arrangements. The Rear View Mirror follow-up album was a failed compare, though it was a small chart entry that spent 13 weeks on the billboard 200 (at the top of #104). In 2010 Billboard named the 20th sexiest song ever “Afternoon Delight.”

The band hosted a show, The Starland Vocal Band Show, which lasted six weeks in the summer of 1977 at CBS. David Letterman was a writer and regular at the show, featuring Mark Russell, Jeff Altman, Proctor and Bergman, too. April Kelly was a series writer, too.

In 1981, the band broke up and could not match their previous achievement. Shortly thereafter, Danoff and Nivert divorced. Each member of the band went to a solo career.

The Starland Vocal Band gathered in 1998 for several concerts, often featuring vocalist children from the four original members. In 2007, they performed on a special “Afternoon Delight” on the New Jersey Network (NJN) in the 1970s.

The song “I guess He’d Rather Stay in Colorado” was co-written by Danoff and Nivert and then “Take Me Home, Country Roads” by John Denver. Denver then signed them on his Windsong Records label.

Bill Danoff is not quite a family name, notwithstanding his two Grammy Awards, a handful of nominations and his induction into the Rock & Roll’s Hall of Fame. Another singer/songwriter and contemporary of Danoff’s, John Denver, is more commonly known thanks to several danoff’s songs that helped make the New Mexican folk-rock crooner the star he was made in the 1970s. On the charts, the single rose to number one. Another song by Danoff and Nivert, and sung by Denver, “I Guess He would rather be in Colorado,” has been adopted as the theme of the Centennial State. Another popular tune was also written by Danoff, “Baby You Look Good to Me Tonight.”

Danoff first took songwriting as a Georgetown University student in Washington, D.C. He and Nivert, who would be his wife later, joined forces in a duo called Fat City. The duo later became Bill and Taffy, and in the early 1970s toured with Denver. In 1974 they took on the singer Margot Chapman and the teenage pianist and vocalist Jon Carroll, which was called Starland Vocal Band. Danoff and his new group signed an agreement with Denver’s Windsong label and soon had a hit single with the eponymous first album “Afternoon Delight” in 1976. Because of the first individual’s success, the Starland Vocal Band received a TV series on the CBS network. After releasing four albums in 1980, the group members went their own way. Danoff’s wedding with Nivert was the victim of the disintegration of the band and they, too, split up.

Danoff continued as a solo performer in music. His later compositions include some of the Top Ten songs, “Friends with you” and “Late Night Radio.” On Something Different from Denver, another song, “Potter’s Wheel,” is featured. In 1998, Danoff helped produce a concert of benefits called John Denver Remembered — By the Old Cellar Door Gang, comprising former bandmates from Denver. Three years later, Danoff was awarded the World Folk Music Association John Denver Award. He also owned and managed a restaurant called Starland Express, his most popular band, located in Washington, D.C.
