Ed Markey, full name Edward John Markey, (born July 11, 1946 in Malden, Massachusetts, United States), is an American politician who was elected to the United States Senate as a Democrat in 2013 and began representing Massachusetts later that year. He previously served in the United States House of Representatives from 1976 to 2013.
Markey was raised in a Roman Catholic home and attended parochial elementary and high schools. He then attended Boston College (B.A., 1968), becoming the first member of his family to do so. Despite his strong opposition to the Vietnam War, he served in the United States Army Reserve from 1968 to 1973. During that time, he attended Boston College to pursue a law degree (1972).
Career
Markey was elected to the Massachusetts House of Representatives in 1973. He steadily rose through the ranks of the state Democratic Party, and in 1976 he ran for a seat in the United States House of Representatives in a special election. Markey won the primary narrowly but easily defeated his Republican opponent in the general election. He was re-elected a total of 19 times.
During his time in the House, he published Nuclear Peril (1982), a book about his efforts to prevent the sale and shipment of uranium from the United States to India. He is known as a staunchly liberal supporter of renewable energy, and he coauthored (with Rep. Henry Waxman) the American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009, which provided tools for investing in clean energy sources. Markey married Susan Blumenthal, a doctor who later served as Assistant Surgeon General of the United States, in 1988.
In June 2013, Markey won a special election to fill the vacancy left by John Kerry’s appointment as Secretary of State. He served the remainder of Kerry’s term before being re-elected in 2014. Markey was involved in broader issues of communication and high-technology policy, advocating for net neutrality, improved Internet privacy, and increased funding for public broadcasting. He also continued to support legislation aimed at combating climate change and other human-caused environmental damage.
