Chris Van Hollen (born January 10, 1959 in Karachi, Pakistan) is an American politician who was elected to the United States Senate as a Democrat in 2016 and began representing Maryland the following year. He previously served in the United States House of Representatives (2003–17).
Van Hollen was born in Karachi, Pakistan, where his father was stationed as a career Foreign Service officer. Chris spent his childhood in Sri Lanka, Turkey, and India. He moved to the United States as a high school student, where he later studied philosophy at Swarthmore College. He attended Harvard University after graduating in 1982, where he earned a master’s degree in public policy (1985). During this time, he met Katherine Wilkens, his future wife; the couple married in 1987 and had three children. Charles (“Mac”) Mathias, a Republican from Maryland who retired in 1987, while pursuing a law degree at Georgetown University in 1990. Van Hollen then worked for the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and later for Maryland Gov. William Donald Schaefer.
Van Hollen was admitted to the Maryland bar in 1990. That year, he ran for and was elected to the state legislature, where he served for four years (1991–95) in the lower House of Delegates and then for eight years (1995–2003) in the Senate. He successfully ran for the United States House of Representatives from Maryland’s Eighth Congressional District in 2002, where he served for seven terms. As a member of the Democratic caucus, he led numerous environmental initiatives to protect the Chesapeake Bay and promoted gun-control legislation while advancing centrist-liberal political positions.
Career
Van Hollen rose through the ranks of the Democratic Party, serving as a lieutenant to House majority (and then minority) leader Nancy Pelosi and establishing a reputation as a scholarly, policy-oriented progressive. As chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, he established a reputation as a skilled campaign organiser and fundraiser. Both abilities came in handy when longtime U.S. Sen. Barbara Mikulski announced in 2015 that she would not seek re-election.
Van Hollen won a tough primary campaign against fellow Democrat and U.S. Representative Donna Edwards, and then easily defeated his Republican opponent in the 2016 general election. Van Hollen was immediately appointed to lead the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, which is in charge of coordinating efforts for the 2018 election cycle.
