Elizabeth Warren, née Elizabeth Herring, is an American legal scholar and politician who was elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate in 2012 and began representing Massachusetts in that body the following year.
Herring grew up in Norman, Oklahoma, where her father was primarily a maintenance worker and her mother worked in catalogue sales. Warren’s family struggled financially after her father suffered a heart attack, and she began waiting tables at the age of 13. She received a debate scholarship at the age of 16 and attended George Washington University in Washington, D.C., though she graduated from the University of Houston (B.S. in speech pathology, 1970). At the age of 19, she married her high school sweetheart, mathematician Jim Warren, and moved to Texas; they had two children before divorcing in 1978. She earned a law degree (1976) from Rutgers University in Newark, New Jersey, practised law out of her living room, and then embarked on a career as a law-school professor that eventually led her to Harvard University. Along the way, she became a bankruptcy law expert. Warren married Harvard law professor Bruce Mann in 1980.
Warren testified before congressional committees about financial issues affecting Americans, a subject she has written about in a number of books, including The Fragile Middle Class: Americans in Debt (2000) and The Two-Income Trap: Why Middle-Class Mothers and Fathers Are Going Broke (2007). Warren rose to national prominence as the chair of the Congressional Oversight Panel for the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP), the body established by the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act to rescue failing American financial institutions in 2008. She then advocated for the establishment of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, which was established by the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act of 2010.
Warren structured and staffed the bureau tasked with protecting people from financial fraud and deception as its interim director, but she was not nominated as its permanent head by U.S. President Barack Obama, who, according to some, feared Republicans would block her appointment. Nonetheless, Warren had become a populist bellwether as well as a liberal icon, lauded by talk-show hosts Jon Stewart and Bill Maher, on whose shows she appeared.
Career
Warren began her campaign for the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate seat long held by Ted Kennedy before his death in 2011. She received nearly 96 percent of the votes cast at the party’s state convention, avoiding a primary election. Warren campaigned as a defender of the embattled middle class, much like her Republican opponent, incumbent Scott Brown, who had won the special election to replace Kennedy.
She refuted charges of Harvard elitism with her down-to-earth personality and argued for the benefits of good government, countering Brown’s advocacy of rugged individualism with her claim that every entrepreneur had benefited from public works and employees well educated in public schools.
Warren explained that her identification as Cherokee and Delaware came from family stories after she was accused of misrepresenting herself as being of partly Native American descent (which she could not formally document). Warren defeated Brown in the November 2012 election, and upon taking office in January 2013, she became the first woman to represent Massachusetts in the United States Senate.
