Whitney Cummings was born in Washington, D.C., on September 4, 1982, to Patti Cummings, a Texan native and Neiman Marcus’s public affairs director at Mazza Gallery, and Eric Lynn Cummings, a lawyer and venture capitalist. She has Kevin, an older half-brother, and Ashley, an older sibling. Cummings was brought up as a Roman Catholic. When she was five years old, her parents divorced.
She claimed that she was raised in an abusive, unstable family. She briefly lived with her aunt in Virginia at age twelve. Cummings attended Potomac, Maryland’s prestigious St. Andrew’s Episcopal Academy, graduating in 2000. She interned at Washington’s NBC-owned news station WRC-TV during high school. At Washington, D.C.’s Studio Theatre, she learned acting.
Cummings enrolled at the University of Pennsylvania’s Annenberg School for Correspondence after high school. She worked at local shopping centers during this time as a department store model. In 2004, with a degree in Journalism, she graduated magna cum laude and originally aspired to a career as a journalist.
Career
After college, Cummings moved to Los Angeles and worked on MTV in 2004 on Punk’d. She appeared in the low-budget thriller EMR the same year, which was screened in Cannes. In 2004, Cummings started doing stand-up. In 2007, she was named one of 10 Comics to Watch 2007 by Variety. In 2008, for Last Comic Standing, she participated in the San Francisco audition, but she did not pass the showcase.
She co-starred in The Tony Rock Project and acted in Made of Honor, the 2008 romantic comedy. Beginning in 2007, Cummings appeared on the E! series Chelsea Lately as a frequent roundtable guest and continued to appear until its closure in 2014. In NBC’s Whitney, a sitcom in which she played a semi-fictionalized version of herself, she subsequently created, directed and starred. Until being annulled in 2013, the series aired for two seasons. The CBS sitcom 2 Broke Girls, which also began in 2011, was similarly produced by Cummings and ended in 2017.
In 2010 on Comedy Central, Cummings launched her first hour-long standup episode, Money Shot. With a second standup special for the network, titled I Love You, she followed this with (2014). In 2016, her third special, I’m Your Girlfriend, was introduced on HBO. Cummings worked as a director and writer for Roseanne’s ABC revival beginning in 2018, but quit the show due to its cancellation. The fourth special from Cummings, Can I Touch It?, debuted in July 2019 on Netflix.
