Ramchandra Prasad Singh Wiki/Bio
Ram Chandra Prasad (RCP) Singh was named the Janta Dal’s new national president on Sunday (United). Singh, a former IAS officer, served as principal secretary to Nitish Kumar during his earlier tenure as chief minister and took voluntary retirement in 2010 in order to seek party nomination to the Rajya Sabha. He was re-nominated to the Upper House in 2016 and currently serves as the General Secretary of the JD(U) (Organisation).
Rajiv Ranjan Singh, alias Lalan Singh, of the RCP and Lok Sabha Member of Parliament was frequently regarded as the JD(Usecond-in-command )’s after Nitish Kumar. With upper caste leader Lalan Singh now concentrating his efforts on national politics, the RCP was preferred for the party’s top job.
For over a decade, the RCP has been active in the JD(U) organisation, focusing on party structure. Like Nitish Kumar, he is an OBC Kurmi from the Nalanda district. With veterans such as Bashistha Narayan Singh ailing, RCP Singh appears to be the logical choice as well. RCP was the man who successfully resisted poll strategist Prashant Kishore’s elevation to the position of JD(U) national vice-president, considered to be Nitish Kumar’s number two position. He also resisted RLSP Chief Upendra Kushwaha’s attempts to reintroduce himself as the party’s second in command. Even if Kushwaha rejoins JD(U), the hierarchy is now established, and he will report to the RCP’s new national president.
The RCP does not have a mass leader and has never had a public face. He advanced through the ranks as a result of his proximity to Nitish Kumar. Nitish Kumar has attempted to reach out to his core Kurmi and Koeri constituency, dubbed Luv-Kush in Bihar, by electing him as party national president.Ram Chandra Prasad Singh, better known by his initials RCP, owes his ascension to the position of Janata Dal (United) President to Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.
Singh, a close confidant of Kumar’s, was elected as the JD’s new president on Sunday (U).Kumar proposed Singh for the top job at the party’s national executive meeting, which was then approved by other members.
The chief minister, who was re-elected as the JD(U) president for a three-year term in 2019, relinquished the post in favour of Singh, the party’s Rajya Sabha leader. The man who prefers to maintain a low profile was previously the regional party’s general secretary (organisation).
Kumar has known the 1984 batch IAS officer from Uttar Pradesh cadre since his tenure as Railway Minister in the late Atal Bihari Vajpayee government.
When Kumar returned to Bihar politics in November 2005 as Chief Minister, Singh returned to his native state as Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister.
In 2010, months before retiring from the military, he left his job and entered politics. Kumar quickly appointed him to the Rajya Sabha, and he remains a member of the Upper House of Parliament.
Singh, a man of few words, prefers to remain in the shadow of his master (Kumar), with whom he shares not only the Kurmi caste but also a strong personal bond.
With the JD(U) in difficult times, having lost its “elder brother” status to the BJP in the NDA in Bihar following a poor showing in the recently concluded assembly election, the 62-year-old Singh’s task is to strengthen the organisation while also dealing astutely with the saffron party.
The JD(U) won only 43 seats in Bihar’s elections, down from 71 in the previous election in 2015. On the other hand, the BJP won 74 seats, assisting the NDA in retaining power in the state.
The saffron party kept its promise to make Kumar chief minister regardless of the partner parties’ vote totals, but Kumar lost the sheen he had enjoyed in the ruling coalition since the Atal Bihari Vajpayee-LK Advani era.
Six of the seven JD(U) MLAs in Arunachal Pradesh have defected to the BJP, and West Bengal’s upcoming elections present immediate challenges for the new JD(U) president.
West Bengal elections, which are scheduled for April-May next year, were also discussed at the national executive meeting.
Singh was born on July 6, 1958, in Mustafapur, Nalanda district. He attended school at Hussainpur in the same district.
He earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Patna College and a master’s degree in history from Jawaharlal Nehru University.
On 21 May 1982, Singh married Girija Singh, with whom he has two daughters. Lipi Singh, one of his daughters, is an IPS officer from the 2016 batch.
She made national headlines in October after police opened fire on a group of people en route to the immersion of the goddess Durga idol in Munger district. She was removed as district SP on the Election Commission’s order in the face of raging protests over the incident.
