Dr. Virendra Kumar Wiki/Bio
Dr Virendra Kumar is a prominent BJP leader from Sagar, Madhya Pradesh. He holds a master’s degree in economics and a doctorate in child labour from Madhya Pradesh’s Dr. Harisingh Gaur University. He was a member of the RSS (Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh) since his youth and rose to the position of convenor of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (A.B.V.P.) in Sagar District. He also initiated a movement to resolve student problems and opened a library for their assistance.
He began his political career as General-Secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (B.J.Y.M.) Sagar District. In 1987, Sri Rajendra Kumar served as convenor of the Bajarang Dal. He began contesting Lok Sabha elections in 1996 and was elected to the 11th, 12th, 13th, 14th, 15th, and 16th Lok Sabha, maintaining a continuous victory streak.
He served as a member of parliament under several ministries during his tenure, including Labor and Welfare, Railways, the National Social Security Board, and the Parliamentary Forum on Children. He was elected to the 16th Lok Sabha in 2014 and currently serves as the Minister of State for Women and Child Development and Minority Affairs in Sri Narendra Modi’s government.
He succeeded Thawar Chand Gehlot, who was appointed governor of Karnataka ahead of Wednesday’s reshuffle.Khatik returned to the Union Council of Ministers after a two-year absence. Khatik began his political career at a young age assisting his father at his bicycle repair shop in Madhya Pradesh’s Sagar district, but this did not deter him from pursuing higher education and dreaming big.
Khatik (67) later earned a doctorate in a field related to child labour and entered politics. A veteran Lok Sabha member, his big break came in September 2017 when he was appointed the first Modi government’s Minister of State for Women and Child Development. The primary challenge facing him as the new Social Justice and Empowerment Minister will be to address issues affecting transgender people, the elderly, and the disabled, who have been disproportionately affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Khatik has been elected to the Lok Sabha seven times during his decades-long political career — four times from Sagar and three times from Tikmagarh. He is currently the Member of Parliament for Tikamgarh.Both Sagar and Tikamgarh are located in the state’s impoverished Bundelkhand region.
Despite his political ascension, the BJP MP has never forgotten his humble beginnings, and he continues to enjoy riding his Bajaj Super scooter and is not afraid to mingle with those who work at local cycle repair shops, a party leader close to him said.
“His father operated a puncture repair shop in Teen Batti Square in Sagar town, and he used to sit there and assist him in running the business,” BJP MLA Shailendra Jain recalls.
He believes that by doing so, people will regard him as one of them and will be more willing to share their problems with him “Brijkishore Tiwari, the BJP’s general secretary for Tikamgarh district, told PTI. Khatik was born on February 27, 1954 and was first elected as a Member of Parliament from Sagar in 1996. He later won the seat in 1998, 1999, and 2004.He was elected to the Lok Sabha from Tikamgarh in 2009, 2014, and 2019.
On June 17, 2019, he was appointed Protem Speaker of the 17th Lok Sabha.He was involved in the RSS as a swayamsevak (volunteer) and also as a “mukhya shikshak” from an early age (main teacher).
Khatik earned a bachelor’s degree in economics from Dr Hari Singh Gour University, Sagar (now a central university).He served a 16-month prison sentence during the Emergency of 1975–77 and also participated in Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan’s “Sampoorna Kranti Andolan.”
