Parshottam Khodabhai Rupala (born 1 October 1954) is an Indian politician who served as the Second Modi government’s Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairy. He is a Rajya Sabha member representing the Indian state of Gujarat and a Bharatiya Janata Party leader. He was a former member of the Gujarat Legislative Assembly from Amreli and a former minister in the Gujarat government.

Rupala was born on 1 October 1954 to Hariben Khodabhai and Khodabhai Madhabhai. Rupala earned a bachelor’s degree in science and a bachelor’s degree in education. In 1976–1977, he attended Saurashtra University and Gujarat University.

He served as School Principal at Hamapur in Medium School from 1977 to 1983 prior to entering politics. From November 1983 to March 1987, he served as chief officer of the Amreli municipality.

Rupala served as the Bhartiya Janta Party’s Amreli district president from 1988 to 1991. This resulted in his appointment as the Bhartiya Janta Party’s Secretary in 1992.

From February 2002 to 2004, he served as Chairman of a youth hostel. In Amreli, he served as trustee of the Kadva Patidar trust, chairman of the Madad trust, and president of the Gujarat electricity board union.He was a member of the Gujarat Legislative Assembly for three consecutive terms, ending in 2002.

From 19 March 1995 to 20 October 1995, and again from 4 November 1995 to 18 September 1996, he served as a Cabinet Minister in Narmada for Irrigation and Water Supply; and for Agriculture from 9 October 2001 to 21 December 2002. From March 1997 to December 1997, he chaired the Gujarat Legislative Assembly’s Public Accounts Committee.

From June 1998 to October 2001, he served as Chairman of Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation (G.I.D.C.).


He was elected to the Rajya Sabha in 2008 and served on the Committee on Food, Consumer Affairs, and Public Distribution (Aug. 2009 – Aug. 2010), the Committee on Personnel, Public Grievances, Law, and Justice (July 2010 –), the Committee for the Ministry of Shipping (Sept. 2010 –), and the Committee on Chemicals and Fertilizers (Aug. 2012 -).

He was re-elected to the Rajya Sabha in a by-election in June 2016 following the death of Congress MP Praveen Rashtrapal. He served as Minister of State in the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare from May 2019 to July 2021. He was appointed Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairy in July 2021.

Career

Parshottam Khodabhai Rupala of the BJP was a Rajya Sabha member. From 1988 to 1991, he served as president of the Amreli district Bhartiya Janta Party and as a member of the Amreli Legislative Assembly. In 1995 and 2001, he also served as a cabinet minister. Rupala was appointed Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare in 2019. Purshottam Rupala was promoted to cabinet rank during the first cabinet reshuffle of a second term Modi government on 7 July 2019.

Since completing his education, he has been an active participant in the bhartiya janta party’s activities. Throughout the early years of his career, he held a variety of positions ranging from ground level worker to senior positions at the district and state levels. From 1988 to 1991, he served as president of the Amreli district bhartiya janta party.

Parshottam Rupala, a senior BJP leader from Gujarat’s influential Kadva Patidar or Patel community, worked for five years as the principal of a government school and then as the chief officer of Amreli municipality before joining the BJP in the late 1980s.

Mr Rupala (66), a native of Amreli district, rose through the party ranks and was elected to the legislature for the first time in 1991 from the Amreli seat, which he retained for two additional terms until 2002.From 1995 to 2002, he served as a minister in the then-BJP government.

Mr Rupala was elected president of the saffron party’s Gujarat unit in 2006 and served in that capacity until 2010, when he was appointed national vice president of the BJP.

Mr Rupala is well-known for his unique and amusing oratory abilities, which help the BJP engage rural audiences during election campaigning.

Mr Rupala, who holds BSC and BEd degrees, served as president of the Amreli district BJP from 1988 to 1991 and represented the Amreli Assembly segment three times between 1991 and 2002, according to his official bio-data.

Mr Rupala, on the other hand, never ran for a state election again following his defeat in the 2002 Assembly elections to Congress’ Paresh Dhanani.He was first elected to the Rajya Sabha in 2008 and served until 2014.
