In 2009, he rose to national prominence after finishing second in the sixth series of The X Factor. In the United Kingdom, he is signed to RCA Records and Sony Music UK, and in the United States, he is signed to Columbia Records. After “You Are Not Alone” alongside the other Series 6 finalists, it was Murs’ first number one single.

Murs and Caroline Flack will replace Dermot O’Leary as co-hosts of The X Factor from Series 12 onwards, it was announced on April 16, 2015. Murs later released 24 Hrs, his fifth studio album, which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. Murs is the son of Vicky-Lynn and Pete Murs, and was born in Witham, Essex. He has a sister, Fay Murs, and a twin brother, Ben Murs.
He went to Howbridge Junior School in Witham and Notley High School in Braintree, Essex, where he played striker for the football team. In the semi-final, he sang “Can You Feel It” and “We Can Work It Out,” and he was one of the three finalists, breaking down when he heard the news.

After trying out unsuccessfully twice before, he chose to re-audition for The X Factor after his return.
