Michael Bennet, full name Michael Farrand Bennet, (born November 28, 1964, New Delhi, India), is an American politician and lawyer who was appointed to the United States Senate as a Democrat in 2009 and elected the following year.
He was born in New Delhi, where his father, Douglas Bennet, worked for the United States State Department, and the family later moved to the Washington, D.C., region. Bennet graduated from Wesleyan University with a bachelor’s degree in history in 1987. He attended to Yale Law School after serving as an advisor to Ohio Governor Richard Celeste (1988–90). He served as editor of The Yale Law Journal before graduating in 1993. Bennet subsequently worked as a clerk for the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals before becoming counsel to the United States deputy attorney general (1995–97) and a special assistant to the United States attorney for Connecticut (1997). He married Susan Daggett during this time, and the couple went on to have three children.
In 1997, Bennet relocated to Denver to join the board of directors of Anschutz Investment Company, where he helped distressed businesses restructure debt and reorganise under bankruptcy orders. His effort caught the attention of Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper (later Governor of Colorado), who appointed him as his chief of staff in 2003. Bennet became superintendent of Denver Public Schools two years later, and he received praise for helping to turn around the failing institution. When Ken Salazar resigned from the Senate to become Secretary of the Interior in 2009, Colorado Governor Bill Ritter named Bennet to complete Salazar’s term.
In 2010, Bennet sought for the seat again, defeating his Republican opponent in a bruising and expensive race. Bennet emerged as a staunch supporter of President Barack Obama in the Senate, openly supporting the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (2010), immigration reform, and other key administration initiatives.
Career
Bennet gained noted for cultivating bipartisan support for his legislative plans during a time of severe political conflict. He concentrated his efforts on the growth of the renewable energy sector, which was vital to his state’s economy. Bennet gained national notoriety in January 2019 after delivering an impassioned statement on the Senate floor in which he accused Republican Sen. Ted Cruz of hypocrisy over the government shutdown.
Bennet announced his 2020 presidential bid in May. He indicated that one of his motivations for running was to “establish government integrity.” Bennet wrote The Land of Flickering Lights: Restoring America in an Age of Broken Politics shortly after entering the presidential race (2019). His campaign, on the other hand, never got off the ground, and he pulled out in February 2020.
