Martin Sheen was born Ramón Antonio Gerardo Estévez on August 3, 1940, but is better known by his stage name, Martin Sheen. He is an American actor. During his career, which spanned sixty years, he was honored with several honors, including three Emmy Awards, a Golden Globe Award, and four Screen Actors Guild Awards. The character of President Josiah Bartlet, whom Sheen played on the NBC series The West Wing (1999–2006), is the one for which he is most known. Sheen gained notoriety thanks to his breakthrough performances in the criminal drama Badlands (1973) and the Vietnam War drama Apocalypse Now (1979), directed by Terrence Malick and Francis Ford Coppola, respectively.

The Subject Was Roses (1968), Catch-22 (1970), The California Kid (1974), Gandhi (1982), Wall Street (1987), Gettysburg (1993), The American President (1995), Catch Me If You Can (2002), The Departed (2006), Bobby (2006), Selma (2014), and Judas and the Black Messiah (2021) are some of the other notable films that Sheen has starred in. In the 2012 film The Amazing Spider-Man, he also played the role of Uncle Ben.

In the films The Missiles of October (1974), The Execution of Private Slovik (1974), Blind Ambition (1979), and Kennedy (1983), he played the roles of Robert F. Kennedy, Eddie Slovik, John Dean, and John F. Kennedy, respectively. Because of his work in the comedy series Murphy Brown (1994), he was honored with the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series. In the Grace and Frankie series that aired on Netflix from 2015 until 2022, he portrayed the role of Robert Hanson.

He was given the stage name Martin Sheen to increase his chances of landing acting roles after he was born and reared to parents of Spanish and Irish descent in the United States. He is the parent of four children involved in the entertainment industry. Sheen has only directed one movie, which was released in 1990 and is titled Cadence. In this movie, Sheen also stars with his kids Charlie and Ramón. In addition to being an active participant in liberal politics, he has narrated, produced, and directed several documentaries.

Following the family’s relocation to Dayton in the 1930s, his father became a manufacturing worker and equipment inspector at the National Cash Register Company. Sheen was the sixth of ten children overall, with nine brothers and one sister, and he grew up on Brown Street in the South Park area. Because of his father’s job, the family made their home on the island of Bermuda in the Pembroke Parish neighborhood of St. John’s Road. It was there that five of his brothers were born. Following the family’s move back to Ohio from Bermuda, the city of Dayton welcomed its first child, a son named Martin.

Sheen suffered from polio as a youngster and was forced to spend a whole year in bed. The therapy he received from his doctor, which was based on Sister Kenny’s approach, enabled him to recover the use of his legs. Sheen’s mother passed away when he was eleven years old, and once she did, the children were confronted with the prospect of spending their lives in an orphanage or with foster families. Because of the aid provided by the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Dayton, the family was able to keep their family unit intact.

Sheen was always interested in performing, but his father discouraged him from pursuing a career in the entertainment industry. In his early twenties, over his father’s disapproval, Charlie Sheen took out a loan from a local priest and relocated to New York City to pursue a career in the entertainment industry. He was a member of the Living Theatre company for two years. Dorothy Day, a Catholic activist, was the one who introduced him to the city of New York.

Through his involvement with the Catholic Worker Movement, he first became committed to the cause of social justice. Years later, he would portray Peter Maurin, a pioneer of the Catholic Worker Movement, in the film Entertaining Angels: The Dorothy Day Story. Sheen purposefully could have done better on the admissions test for the University of Dayton so that he could concentrate on his acting career instead.

James Dean was a significant inspiration for Sheen throughout his career. When asked about Dean’s influence on him, Sheen said, “All of his movies had a profound effect on my life, my work, and all of my generation.” He went much beyond performing in movies. It had ceased to be acting and had instead become human behavior. Sheen collaborated with other performers to establish a theatrical group, expecting one of their performances to bring him attention. In 1963, he had a guest appearance in the episode “Nightmare” of the science fiction television series The Outer Limits.

Co-starring in the Broadway play, The Subject Was Roses in 1964, he repeated the part in the film adaptation of the same name in 1968, for which he was nominated for a Golden Globe Award in the category of Best Supporting Actor. Sheen also acted in the television production Ten Blocks on the Camino Real (1966), an adaptation of Tennessee Williams’ play Camino Real. Ten Blocks on the Camino Real was directed by Jack Landau and broadcast by NET, an earlier version of PBS.

In 1968, he performed at The Public Theater as the title character in Hamlet, directed by Joseph Papp,. He included language mainly in English but also some in Spanish as Hamlet’s alter-ego. Sheen was a guest star on several popular television series throughout the 1960s and early 1970s, including Insight (which he appeared in from the 1960s through the 1980s), My Three Sons (1964), Flipper (1967), The F.B.I. (1968), Mission: Impossible (1969), Hawaii Five-O (1970), Dan August (1971), The Rookies (1973), Columbo (1973), and The Streets of San Francisco (1973).

In the television series Mod Squad (1970–1971), he also appeared as “Danny Morgan” in many episodes.[21] At the beginning of the 1970s, Sheen began to concentrate more of his efforts on television films and feature pictures. In the film version of Catch-22, which was released in 1970, Sheen played the role of Dobbs. The following year, in 1972, he had a co-starring role in the controversial and Emmy Award–winning television picture That Certain Summer. This film is widely regarded as the first television movie produced in the United States to represent homosexuality sympathetically.

His next significant part came in a feature film in 1973 when he featured with Sissy Spacek in the crime thriller Badlands. In this picture, he took on the character of an antisocial serial killer. Sheen has remarked that his part in Apocalypse Now, where he played a United States Army special operations officer, is his all-time favorite performance. The other of his two favorite roles is the one he played in Badlands. Sheen had a role alongside David Janssen in the first pilot episode of the television series Harry O, which was titled “Such Dust As Dreams Are Made On,” and it was shown in 1973.

In the television film The California Kid, released in 1974, Sheen played the role of a hot rod driver. In the same year, he was nominated for an Emmy Award for Best Actor in a Television Drama for his performance as Pvt. Eddie Slovik in the television film The Execution of Private Slovik. The film was based on an event during World War II and recounted the tale of the first United States soldier to be executed for desertion in the United States since the end of the American Civil War.

Sheen’s performance was the impetus for Francis Ford Coppola to cast him in the central role of U.S. Army Captain Benjamin L. Willard in the 1979 film Apocalypse Now, which brought him widespread acclaim. Sheen acknowledged that he was not in terrific form and had been drinking excessively when filming in the Philippine jungle during the typhoon season 1976. Sheen’s depiction of Willard as highly inebriated was helped by the fact that Sheen was celebrating his 36th birthday on location that day and was indeed drunk. This took place during the film’s renowned opening scene, which took place in a hotel room in Saigon.

Sheen had a heart attack around one year into the production and was forced to crawl to a road to get care. When he was convalescing, his younger brother Joe Estevez filled in for him in many long shots and some voice-overs. A few weeks later, Sheen was able to go back to work on the set. In the 1976 film The Little Girl Who Lives Down the Lane, he played the role of Frank Hallet, the villain with ill intentions for the adolescent heroine Rynn Jacobs (Jodie Foster), who Jodie Foster plays.

The landlady, Cora Hallet (played by Alexis Smith), gave birth to Frank, her son. Kirk Douglas, another actor with familial links to Bermuda, was Sheen’s co-star in the 1979 film The Final Countdown. Diana Dill, Douglas’s first wife and the mother of their sons Michael and Joel Douglas, was a Bermudian. Sheen was born on the island of Bermuda. During the early 1980s, he appeared in several films, including The Final Countdown (1980), a science fiction war drama, and Gandhi (1982), a biographical epic.

The sports drama That Championship Season (1982) and the drama film Wall Street (1987), starring Michael Douglas and his son Charlie Sheen, are considered among the best dramatic films ever made. In the 1984 film Firestarter, he starred with Drew Barrymore and David Keith as Captain Hollister. Sheen was nominated for the British Academy Television Award for Best Actor and the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor – Miniseries or Television Film for his performance as John F. Kennedy, President of the United States of America, in the miniseries Kennedy (1983). Both awards were presented in 1984.

Additionally, he has played roles such as Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy in the television special The Missiles of October (1974), White House Chief of Staff A.J. McInnerney in The American President (1995), and White House Counsel John Dean in the television miniseries Blind Ambition (1979), for which he was nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Television Series Drama. The Oliver Stone biopic JFK (1991) included him as the film’s narrator the year it was released.

Other roles include the villainous would-be president Greg Stillson in the movie The Dead Zone, the President in the television miniseries Medusa’s Child starring Lori Loughlin and Chris Noth, and the President in the short film Family Attraction. Sheen received praise for his performance as General Robert E. Lee in the 1993 film Gettysburg, which Ronald Maxwell directed. The film was highly welcomed.
