Marco Borsato Wiki/Bio

Italian-born pop musician Marco Borsato is considered to be one of the most successful pop performers of the rock period in the Netherlands. Since the Beatles, he has had the most number-one hits in the Dutch Top 40, and his domestic records have stayed unmatched. According to SENA, Borsato was the most visible Dutch entertainer on radio and television from 1998 to 2001, according to their calculations.

He has sold millions of recordings and received various prizes, including the Popprijs and the Exportprijs, as well as several Edisons and numerous TMF awards. Borsato was born on December 21, 1966, in Alkmaar, Noord-Holland, to an Italian father and a Dutch mother. He was the youngest of three children. While growing up, he split his time between Italy, where his father had a restaurant, and the Netherlands, where he attended secondary school.

Having moved to Alkmaar with his mother following the divorce of his parents, Borsato has been there ever since. After high school, he pursued a career in the culinary arts. In the following years, he served in the military. It was there that he had his first taste of musical entertainment.

Following his military duty, Borsato did day jobs in construction and in his mother’s shop, as well as evening shifts in restaurants and cafés; he even managed to squeeze in some singing lessons as well. A few months after taking part in a talent event, he decided to put on a one-man show that drew the notice of voice trainers Gerard Joling and Karin Bloemen, as well as a management company.

By making a last-minute appearance on The Soundmixshow, Borsato was able to advance to the preliminary rounds of the television show circuit with their assistance. Having won the preliminary round, Borsato advanced to the live finals, which he also won.

As a result, he was approached about signing a recording contract. It was in May 1990 that he released his first song, “At This Moment.” When Borsato’s single reached the top of the charts, his light began to shine brighter. It was in August of that year that he launched his debut album, Emozioni, which was entirely comprised of original Italian compositions.

Sento, Borsato’s second single and album, was released in 1991; both were recorded entirely in Italian. Neither the album nor the single were particularly successful. With the release of Giorno Per Giorno in 1992, which was written entirely by Borsato himself, record sales proceeded to plummet even lower.

A team of Dutch songwriters teamed with composer John Ewbank to translate Italian material and develop some original Dutch pieces for Borsato’s new album. Polydor thought it was time for a change and Borsato’s image was refurbished, as was his music.

The track “Dromen Zijn Bedrog” was released in 1994 and became a hit. After a few months of silence, the track was unexpectedly pushed to the top of the charts, where it remained for an incredible 13 weeks, breaking all previous records.

Eventually, more than 350,000 copies of the book were distributed. The success of the single had a direct consequence: the new album, simply titled Marco, sold half a million copies in its first week of release. At the end of the year, for the first time, the second single, “Waarom Nou Jij?” also reached the top of the list.

Marco Borsato became one of the most well-known faces in Dutch pop music overnight. Als Geen Ander, cooperation between text writers who translated Italian literature and John Ewbank’s music, was released in 1995. It was the second collaboration between text writers and music.

Als Geen Ander also had two hit singles, “Je Hoeft Niet Naar Huis Vannacht” and “Kom Maar Bij Mij,” which both peaked at number one on the Dutch charts. Borsato’s music appealed to a wide range of people, from college students to housewives, and his CDs were sold all over the world. The next year, the track “Ik Leef Niet Meer Voor Jou” went on to become a worldwide hit.

The release of “De Waarheid,” the first single from the upcoming album of the same name, which was composed almost exclusively by John Ewbank, came at the end of the year. Almost 300,000 copies were sold on the first day of the book’s release. The milestone of half a million copies sold — which has become something of a Borsato trademark — was exceeded only a few weeks later.

He was the most talked-about celebrity in the country, with thousands of recordings sold and hundreds of interviews conducted. Throughout the spring and summer, he performed extensively throughout Holland, culminating in 14 sold-out gigs in Ahoy! City (with in excess of 150,000 attendees).

In addition, he released the track “Wereld Zonder Jou,” which was a collaboration with Total Touch’s Trijntje Oosterhuis. With his victory in Groningen and the announcement that he was engaged to TV personality Leontine Ruiters, he had a successful year both professionally and personally. They were married the following year and had a child together.

Career

As a result of his work on “Wereld Zonder Jou,” Marco received multiple TMF prizes as well as two Edison awards: one for best singer and another for best single. There has been a new album released. De Bestemming sold around half a million copies of his book.

Borsato was named the most played musician on Dutch radio by SENA, according to the organization. In 1999, he was given the Gouden Harp, and his single “Binnen” reached number one in the Netherlands. He was once again hailed as the most widely broadcast performer on the radio.

Borsato’s studio album Luid en Duidelijk was released in the year 2000. It went platinum many times, selling more than 400,000 copies, and earned him two TMF awards for best album. In October, he played nine sold-out gigs at Ahoy! The track “Wat Is Mijn Hart” was released in November of this year.

Borsato was named the most played artist on Dutch radio for the fourth consecutive year in 2001, according to SENA, which awarded him yet another Edison award that year. “Lopen Op Het Water,” a new song from the band, was released in 2002 as part of a compilation album called Onderweg.

The song peaked at number one on the charts and was sung live at the wedding of Crown Prince Willem Alexander in the Netherlands in 2011. Borsato played three consecutive sold-out gigs in De Kuip in June, bringing his touring season to a close in front of more than 150,000 fans.

For him, the year 2003 was a particularly notable one. For the DVD Onderweg, he got the Exportprijs, an Edison, two TMF prizes, and an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. The only distinction he was deprived of was that of being the most played artist.

The track “Afscheid Nemen Bestaat Niet” debuted at number one on the Dutch singles chart. The band’s next single, “Voorbij,” was likewise a hit, propelling the album Zien to the top of the charts and exceeding 325,000 copies sold. A total of nine times, Borsato has been awarded the title of best Dutch vocalist at the TMF awards ceremony.

After receiving the Order of Oranje Nassau in April, he sold out the Kuip for the second time in June, this time for six nights in a row (almost 300,000 people), becoming the first Dutch artist ever to do so and breaking the previous record of four sold-out nights, which dated back to Dire Straits’ On Every Street tour.

That summer, he collaborated with rapper Ali B. to record a live track, which peaked at number one on the charts. To cap it all off, he ended the year by recovering his position as the most played musician on the radio. Marco received three Edison Awards in 2005, as well as his tenth TMF Award for Best Dutch Artist.

Aside from that, he was named Artist of the Decade in 2007. He performed for the 25th anniversary of Queen Beatrix’s coronation and sold out three weeks’ worth of shows in Belgium. In February 2006, the track “Because We Believe,” which was a collaboration with Italian artist Andrea Bocelli, was made available.

Writing and producing credit goes to David Foster, a 14-time Grammy winner who is best known for his work with Celine Dion, Lionel Richie, and Band from TV, among other artists. Borsato’s eighth number-one single came as a result of this release.

In addition, he got his final TMF award. He made the decision not to compete for it again because he wanted other bands or musicians to take home the prize in the following years. His next single was “Every time I Think of You,” a duet with Lucie Silvas, which was released later in the year.

He capped off the year with 10 Symphonica in Rosso performances in the Gelredome, backed by his own band and a 40-piece orchestra. He was the most successful performer of the year. In 2007, he received a Best Single award from 3FM for the accompanying hit “Rood,” which was also designated the year’s most successful single.

Having taken a long break from studio recording, Borsato returned with Wit Licht, which was released in late 2008. Despite being less successful than his previous work from the 1990s and 2000s, it nonetheless spent six weeks at the top of the Dutch album chart during that period (and just as many topping the Belgian chart).

Dromen Durven Delen, which was released in 2010 and was driven to success by the Top Ten singles “Waterkant” and “Schouler a Schouler,” was also a hit (the latter featuring Guus Meeuwis). Duizend Spiegels, Borsato’s eleventh studio album released in 2013, was a much bigger hit in the Netherlands than it was in Belgium.

It spent six weeks at the top of the Dutch album chart in late 2013 and early 2014, thanks to a pair of popular singles, “Muziek,” which featured Ali B and Bag2Bank, and “Ik Zou Het Zo Weer Overdone,” which featured Trijntje Oosterhuis.

Borsato’s eleven Towards the close of 2015, Borsato announced the release of his thirteenth studio album, Borsato achieved particular fame in 1996 with an adaptation of Riccardo Cocciante’s Margherita, which was a critical and commercial triumph. Borsato’s career took off after he made the decision to continue singing in the Dutch language.
