Kane Allen Brown was born on October 21, 1993, in a rural area of northwest Georgia and Chattanooga, Tennessee. He had a difficult childhood because he was raised by his single mother. His family frequently moved from one town to another, and he was sometimes homeless. They eventually made their home in Red Bank, Tennessee.
Throughout his childhood, he attended a number of schools. While attending Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe High School in Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia, he sang with his friend Lauren Alaina, who went on to finish second on American Idol season 10.
He grew up listening to country and R&B music and initially wanted to pursue the latter. However, in the 11th grade, he won a contest by singing Chris Young’s “Gettin’ You Home,” after which he shifted his focus to country music. In 2013, Kane Brown auditioned for both ‘American Idol’ and ‘X-Factor,’ and was chosen for the latter. When the show’s producer suggested putting him in a boy band, he decided to leave because he wanted to pursue a solo career.
He began posting his covers of popular singles online after leaving ‘X-Factor.’ In no time, he had amassed a sizable fan base on the internet. His videos featured covers of songs by Brantley Gilbert, Billy Currington, Alan Jackson, and Lee Brice, among others.
His cover of George Strait’s “Check Yes or No” went viral, and his online popularity skyrocketed. His videos amassed millions of views over time. Encouraged by the response, he posted a teaser of his original single ‘Used to Love You Sober,’ which was initially available on his Facebook page. Within the first three hours of posting, it received a million views, and within the next two weeks, it received eleven million views.
Career
He took the next step after becoming an online music sensation by releasing his first EP, titled ‘Closer,’ on June 2, 2015. The money he raised through the crowd-funding website ‘Kickstarter’ was used to create the six-song EP. It debuted at number 22 on the Top Country Albums chart and sold 3,200 copies in its first week of release. Don’t Go City on Me peaked at number 43 on the Country Digital Songs chart.
In the months that followed, he released several hit singles, the most notable of which was ‘Used to Love You Sober,’ which was released on his birthday, October 21, 2015. It peaked at No. 2 on the Country Digital Songs chart. Within two days of its release, the single sold over 38,000 copies! During this time, he also released the singles ‘Last Minute Late Night’ and ‘I Love That I Hate You.’
For him, 2016 was a very productive year. He released his debut EP ‘Chapter 1’ in March, followed by his debut full-length album in December. The album was a huge success and was certified platinum in the United States. In March, he released his first EP under Sony Music Nashville, titled ‘Chapter 1,’ after signing with the label on January 27, 2016. The EP debuted at No. 9 on the US Billboard 200 and No. 3 on the Top Country Albums chart. It sold over 30,000 units in its first week.
His self-titled debut album, released on December 2, 2016, debuted at number five on the US Billboard 200 and number one on the Top Country Albums chart. The album featured several chart-topping singles, including ‘Hometown,’ ‘What Ifs’ (with Lauren Alaina), ‘Thunder in the Rain,’ ‘Ain’t No Stopping Us Now,’ ‘Setting the Night on Fire,’ and ‘Heaven’ (deluxe edition bonus track).
