John Anthony Barrasso is an American physician and politician who currently serves as the senior United States Senator from Wyoming. He was born on July 21, 1952. He formerly served in the Wyoming State Senate as a member of the Republican Party.
Barrasso was born and raised in Reading, Pennsylvania, and got his B.S. and M.D. from Georgetown University. Before going to Wyoming and starting a private orthopaedics practise in Casper, he completed his medical residency at Yale University. Barrasso was a member of a number of medical groups and organisations.
Barrasso, the son of Louise M. and John Anthony Barrasso, Jr., was born in Reading, Pennsylvania, in 1952. He has Italian ancestors. He graduated from Central Catholic High School in 1970, before it combined with Holy Name High School in 2011 to form Berks Catholic High School. [requires citation] Barrasso spent two years at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (when he joined the Phi Kappa Tau fraternity) before moving to Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., where he earned a Bachelor of Science in biology with Phi Beta Kappa honours in 1974. In 1978, he graduated from Georgetown University School of Medicine with an M.D. In New Haven, Connecticut, he completed his residency at Yale Medical School.
Career
Senator Craig L. Thomas died earlier that month, and Governor Dave Freudenthal appointed Barrasso to replace him on June 22, 2007. Because the seat was vacated by a Republican, Freudenthal was limited to three candidates picked by the Republican State Central Committee under state law. Former State Treasurer Cynthia Lummis of Cheyenne, subsequently a member of the United States House of Representatives and Wyoming’s junior senator, and former Republican State Chairman and lobbyist Tom Sansonetti, a former aide to Thomas, were among the others. Matt Mead, the grandson of former Senator Clifford P. Hansen, ran for governor, as did Ray Hunkins, a Wheatland rancher and lawyer, who ran in 2006. Barrasso stated at the time of his appointment that he will run in the November 2008 special election to replace the remainder of Thomas’ term.
When Barrasso competed for the Republican Senate nomination in 1996, he campaigned as an abortion rights supporter. He proposed a failed bill in the Wyoming Legislature to regard the killing of a pregnant woman as a double homicide. He voted to ban abortion funding from the federal government.
