Mike Enzi Wiki/Bio
Michael Bradley Enzi was born on February 1, 1944, Enzi attended George Washington University and the University of Denver after growing up in Thermopolis, Wyoming. Before being elected mayor of Gillette, Wyoming in 1974, he grew his father’s shoe store business. He worked for the United States Department of the Interior in the late 1970s. He served in the Wyoming House of Representatives (1987–1991) and the Wyoming Senate (1991–1997) as a state representative. He worked in the energy industry as an accountant and executive director in the 1980s and 1990s.
Enzi was elected mayor of Gillette at the age of 30 in 1974 and served for two terms until 1982. During his reign, the city grew by a factor of two. Enzi worked on energy policy with the US Department of Interior’s Coal Advisory Committee from 1976 to 1979.
Career
Enzi was a Republican who served in the Wyoming House of Representatives from 1987 until 1991. From 1991 to 1997, he was a member of the Wyoming Senate. Enzi became a vocal opponent of gambling legalisation measures in the state senate. [requires citation] He was the chief speaker for WyBett, an anti-casino organisation, in 1994. [requires citation] He also worked as an accountant for an oil drilling business from 1985 to 1997, and as an executive director for the Black Hills Corporation, an energy holding firm that controls utilities, natural gas, and coal mining activities, in the 1990s.
In 1996, Enzi was elected to the United States Senate for the first time. He won a close primary against orthopaedic surgeon John Barrasso, 32 percent to 30%, before defeating former Secretary of State Kathy Karpan by 12 points in the general election. Enzi was the sole accountant in the United States Senate at the time of his election. (#14) In 2002, he was re-elected with a huge margin. When his colleague Craig L. Thomas died of leukaemia on June 4, 2007, he became Wyoming’s senior senator. Barrasso, a former state senator from Casper, took Thomas’ seat.
Enzi is a staunch conservative on social issues. He opposes all forms of abortion and has voted in favour of bills that would place limits on the practise for minors, military personnel, and others. He supported unsuccessful constitutional proposals that would have prohibited gay marriage and flag desecration. In August 2013, however, Enzi was the sole Republican to sign a letter in support of lifting the nationwide ban on men who have sex with males donating blood. Enzi is also a strong advocate of gun rights, and the National Rifle Association rates him highly (NRA).
