Jerry Moran, also known as Gerald W. Moran, is an American politician who was elected to the United States Senate as a Republican in 2010 and began representing Kansas the following year.
Moran grew up in Plainville, Kansas, a small town in north-central Kansas. He first attended Fort Hays State University (FHSU) before transferring to the University of Kansas (KU), where he earned a bachelor’s degree in economics in 1976. He worked in banking for a few years before returning to KU to study law, where he received his doctorate in jurisprudence in 1981. He then worked as a state and county attorney before becoming a political science professor at FHSU. Moran married around this time, and he and his wife, Robba, had two children.
Moran was elected to the Kansas Senate in 1988. He was elected in 1989 and later became majority leader (1995–97). In 1996, he was elected to the United States House of Representatives from the largely rural 1st congressional district, which included more than half of the state. He served in the House of Representatives from 1997 to 2011, eventually becoming a senior member of the House Committee on Agriculture. In 2010, he ran for the United States Senate and won with a commanding majority in a four-way race.
Career
Moran remained active in agricultural issues as a senator. He also dealt with national security, military, and technology issues, becoming known for championing technological innovation and measures to ease visa procedures for well-qualified foreign applicants.
At the same time, he was a vocal opponent of President Barack Obama’s administration on most issues, strongly opposing provisions of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, Medicaid expansion, and other health-care initiatives; opposing efforts to regulate the sale of automatic weapons; and opposing same-sex marriage. He cosponsored legislation that would prohibit all federal funding for abortions and proposed a constitutional amendment requiring the federal government to keep a balanced budget.
