Pat Roberts Wiki/Bio
He previously served in the United States House of Representatives from 1981 to 1997.Roberts comes from a family of journalists and politicians; his father was chairman of the Republican National Committee in 1953, and his great-grandfather founded a newspaper during the territorial era.
Roberts earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Kansas State University in Manhattan in 1958. He joined the United States Marine Corps that year and left in 1962 with the rank of captain.
He later relocated to Arizona, where he worked as a reporter and editor for several newspapers. In 1967, he returned to Kansas to work as an aide to U.S. Sen. Frank Carlson, and the following year, he began working for U.S. Rep. Keith Sebelius (who would later become Kathleen Sebelius’ father-in-law, governor of Kansas from 2003 to 2009 and U.S. secretary of health and human services from 2009 to 14). Roberts married in 1969, and he and his wife, Franki, had three children.
Career
When Sebelius announced his retirement in 1980, Roberts ran for his seat and easily won in the Republican-dominated 1st congressional district. Following his election the following year, he generally pursued conservative policies, particularly on social issues; he was a vocal opponent of abortion and same-sex marriage.
Seven times, Roberts was re-elected. He ran successfully for the Senate seat vacated by Nancy Kassebaum in 1996. As a senator, Roberts famously voted for the use of military force against Iraq in 2002 and has consistently supported military spending.
He was the chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence from 2003 to 2007. During President Barack Obama’s administration, he later opposed the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (2010) and a number of other Democratic initiatives. In 2014, Roberts faced the most difficult reelection campaign of his career, overcoming a surprisingly strong primary challenge before winning a close general election.
