Jennie Kim was born on January 16, 1996, in the Seoul Capital Area of South Korea. She travelled to Australia and New Zealand with her family when she was eight years old. Kim’s mother asked if she liked New Zealand and if she wanted to stay, to which she responded “yes.” She was sent to Waikowhai Intermediate School in Auckland, New Zealand, a year later, where she lived with a home-stay family.
In MBC’s special documentary English, Must Change to Survive, Kim discussed her experiences learning a foreign language (2006). She aspired to be a ballet dancer during her teenage years. She enrolled in ACG Parnell College after finishing Intermediate.
Although living in New Zealand, Kim became aware of K-pop and developed an interest in YG Entertainment’s songs. Her mother intended to send her to Florida at the age of 14 to continue her education and pursue a career as a lawyer or teacher; however, she disliked the proposal because she would not be able to find jobs she wanted while living alone; her family accepted her decision and she returned to South Korea in 2010. Kim auditioned for YG Entertainment the same year, performing Rihanna’s “Take a Bow,” and was later accepted as a trainee. Her studies were completed at Cheongdam Middle School.
Career
Kim made her public debut on April 10, 2012, when she was featured in a photo titled “Who’s that girl?” on YG Entertainment’s official site. Her photograph piqued people’s attention, and it quickly became the most-searched-for subject on portal pages under the moniker “Mystery Girl.” YG Entertainment posted a YouTube video titled “YG Trainee – Jennie Kim” on August 30 via their blog, covering B.o.album B.’s “Strange Clouds” featuring Lil Wayne. Kim made her first public appearance as the lead actress in G-music Dragon’s video for “The XX” from his extended play, One of a Kind, on September 1.
Another video, titled “Jennie Kim – YG New Artist,” was released on January 21, 2013, covering rapper Wale’s song “Lotus Flower Bomb.” Kim was featured on Lee Hi’s B-side track “Unique” from her debut album, First Love, in March, and Seungri’s B-side track “GG Be” from his extended play, Let’s Talk About Love, in August. G-B-side Dragon’s track “Black” featured her in September, and she recorded the hook in less than five days before the release of his album Coup d’etat. She made her first stage appearance alongside G-Dragon on SBS’ Inkigayo on September 8.
In July 2018, Jennie appeared on Running Man alongside Jisoo, another member of Blackpink. A video of her weeping after going through a horror room with Lee Kwang-soo went viral in South Korea, with over one million views on one portal site and over three million views through several portal pages, VODs, and social media platforms. She went on to be named one of the best variety stars found by Running Man in 2018.
After gaining notice for her previous appearance, Jennie was welcomed back. Jennie was reported to be the first choice for casting and had several offers from broadcasters for variety shows. Jennie was announced as a cast member for SBS’ upcoming variety show, Village Survival, the Eight, on October 1. This was her first lasting role in a television show.
She was the first Korean solo artist to debut at Coachella in April 2019. Jennie co-wrote the song “Lovesick Girls,” which was released as the third single from the group’s first Korean-language studio album, The Album, on October 2, 2020.
