Ian George Brown is an English musician (born 20 February 1963). He was the lead singer of the Stone Roses alternative rock band from 1983 until they broke up in 1996. After the fraction, he began his solo career with six studio albums, a major compilation of hits, a remix album and 17 singles. On 19 October 2011, he returned to sing for the Stone Roses. He made a statement on 20 October saying that, while he had been reunited with the band, it did not mark the end of his solo endeavours. Brown was born in Warrington in 1963 and grew up until around 6 years of age on Forster Street, Orford. His father was a carpenter, George, and his mother Jeane worked in a paper mill as a receiver. Ian Brown symbolised the arrogant cockureness of his mouthpiece, Stone Roses, as a foreman for one of the most revered British bands of the 80s and 90s. Although the band released one of the most influential albums in the decade in 1989 (their debut there), in the early 1990s they slowly imploded and released just another album before splitting. A new band, Seahorses, was formed by guitarist/songwriter John Squire and Primal Scream by bassist Mani (Gary Mounfield).
Brown opened his career after Stone Roses with Unfinished Monkey Business, a 1998 solo LP. The album was recorded with the support of former guitarist Aziz Ibrahim from Roses, but showed a more emotionally diverse approach to the making of music than anticipated. In early 2000 the excellent follow-up, Golden Greats, arrived in the United States and one year later the Sphere Music followed.
In 2003 Brown wrote a volume in the Under the Influence series and had a cameo in Harry Potter’s third film, Harry Potter and Azkaban. The following year Brown released Solarised, his most diverse and politically accused record. He worked in The World Is Yours for 2007 with hip-hop producer Emile and an alternative supergroup (with Steve Jones, Paul Cook and Paul Ryder). A song originally designed for Rihanna (“Stellify”), and an unexpected cover of Zager and Evans’ 1969 hit “In the Year 2525” were released two years later.
Brown performed with Ibrahim, Inder Mathura (percussion), Simon Moore (drums), and Sylvan Richardson (bass), including at the Glastonbury Festival and at the V Festival, in the summer of 1998. After a flight from his live show in Paris, Brown was arrested for using threatening behaviour against an airline steward and captain, a charge he had denied and had his tour rescheduled.
Polydor Records published his second album, Golden Greats, in 1999. It had more electronic devices and received critical acclaim. Brown first wanted outside production aid for his third studio album Music of the Spheres, hiring songwriter and producer Dave McCracken, who would be regular collaborator. For the first time, he toured the USA as a solo artist in support of the album.
Brown’s fourth solo album, Solarized, was first released in the UK on September 13, 2004, under the new Polydor imprint Fiction Records. When the new A&R fiction chancellor in HitQuarters was asked what he’s contributing to Brown’s records, “Not so much is to be done. Ian is the master of his own records very much.”
Brown has released six solo albums and fourteen United Kingdom Top 40 singles since the Stone Roses broke up in 1996. He has sold seven British tours and three times performed at the Glastonbury Festival, including the 2005 Other Stage. Since 1998, he has performed 5 times at the V Festival, T at the Park and Oxegen Festivals and the Move Festival in 2002 at Old Trafford Cricket Ground, as well as two tours of Australia in 2006 and 2008.
