Howard Stern Show Wiki/Bio

The Howard Stern Show is a radio show hosted by Howard Stern, a well-known American radio personality, that was nationally syndicated on terrestrial radio from WXRK in New York City from 1986 to 2005. Since 2006, the program has aired on Howard 100 and Howard 101, two uncensored channels on SiriusXM, Stern’s subscription-based satellite radio station. Former members Jackie Martling, Billy West, John Melendez, and Artie Lange are among the influential staff members, as our co-host and news anchor Robin Quivers, writer Fred Norris, and executive producer Gary Dell’Abate.

Stern started his radio career in the mid-1970s, doing morning shifts at 107.1 WRNW in Briarcliff Manor, New York, 106.9 WCCC-FM in Hartford, Connecticut, and 106.7 WWWW in Detroit, where he produced his program. He started his career in 1981 at Washington, D.C.’s 101.1 WWDC-FM, where he was first teamed with Quivers and became a ratings hit. After that, he worked for three years at New York City’s AM 660 WNBC. Stern moved to WXRK after his sudden shooting, where he stayed for 20 years, until December 2005.

The Howard Stern Show was syndicated to 60 radio markets around this period and had a total audience of 20 million listeners. From 1994 to 2001, it was the highest-rated morning radio show in New York City. The display was also the most fined, with the Federal Communications Commission levying a total of $2.5 million in penalties for what it found to be indecent content. Stern signed a five-year deal with Sirius in 2004 for a record $500 million.

The Howard Stern Show has been produced since 1994 and shown on numerous networks, including the E! and CBS television stations, in addition to radio broadcasts. From 2005 to 2013, it was shown on HowardTV, Stern’s own on-demand streaming cable channel. The Howard 360 app was unveiled by SiriusXM in 2018 to enable viewers to view video clips from the show.

On January 9, 2006, Sirius XM broadcasted the first episode of The Howard Stern Show. The display opened with a flatulence sound effect applied to Also sprach Zarathustra. The show’s new announcer, George Takei, was then introduced. A day before, 180,000 Sirius radios were turned on. Stern read the list of surprises for the show’s “Revelations Game,” in which cast members revealed a previously hidden truth about themselves.

Stern announced in May 2006 that he had received invitations to return to terrestrial radio from three major corporations. Stern said that it would be “nice to go back and knock their heads” even if he would never return. About the fact that the corporations’ identities were never released, media outlets reported that Stern was contemplating a comeback. On May 10, the Associated Press was ordered on-air to dispel the rumors. “I wouldn’t do terrestrial radio for any reason,” Stern said. In September 2006, rumors that Stern would return surfaced again, but Stern and Sirius all refuted them.

On June 7, 2006, Stern revealed that the litigation deal with CBS Radio had eventually granted Sirius full access to his whole back catalog of WXRK broadcasts, totaling nearly 23,000 hours. Sirius reportedly agreed to pay CBS $2 million for the rights, which works out to around $87 per hour of tape. On December 2, 2009, it was revealed that all of the tapes had been digitized and stored on a server with several terabytes of files.

Lange quit the show in January 2010 after attempting suicide. Stern announced the signing of a new five-year deal with Sirius XM on December 9, 2010, which expired in December 2015. Howard TV’s lease was not extended in September 2013, and the channel was discontinued.

The show aired live from Los Angeles in October 2019 to celebrate the launch of a new SiriusXM studio. This was the first time the show has aired outside of New York City since 2004.

Stern was chastised in June 2020 for a 1993 sketch from his New Year’s Rotten Eve Pageant special in which he wore blackface. Stern has previously denied using the N-word during an appearance on The View, but he did so several times during the episode. Stern responded to the revived debate by saying: “It was fucking insane what I did… I’ll be the first to confess it: I’m a snob. I’m not going to repeat those old shows and I’m not sure who the man is. But that was my act, and I was the master of it.” Both Quivers and Stern claimed that they, as well as the show, have “evolved” over time.
