Fans may not be surprised by the band’s decision, as the band’s website has always featured snippets from the band’s personal collection. On their website, Def Leppard released images of the plaque, the day’s events, and a vintage T-shirt from 1977 as part of their “Def Leppard Day” celebration, which takes place on the 5th of October every year.

Hysteria’s 33rd anniversary in 2020 will be marked by a memorabilia contest, in which the band asks its fans to share any images of objects they own with the band’s vault in order to be eligible for a prize.

Def Leppard was, in many respects, the most influential hard rock band of the 1980s. Only a handful of bands were able to capture the essence of the era as well. As part of the New Wave of British Powerful Metal, Def Leppard established a cult following outside of the scene by reducing their heavy riffs and focusing on melody.

By the time Pyromania was released in 1983, the band was on the verge of crossover stardom, and they tapped into the burgeoning MTV network to their benefit. With 1987’s blockbuster Hysteria and 1992’s Adrenalize, they withstood the mainstream shift to grunge and became one of the most popular bands of the 1980s. That was followed by a period of consistent touring and record releases, with occasional surprises like 2008’s Yeah! that brought back memories of the band’s heyday and a loyal following.

When Rick Savage and Pete Willis were youths, they created a Sheffield-based band called Def Leppard in 1977. Later, vocalist Joe Elliott, a fervent admirer of T. Rex and Mott the Hoople, joined the group, re-christening the group Deaf Leopard in the process. Once they had changed their name, the band started playing local Sheffield pubs, augmented by a now-forgotten drummer.

By the time they had acquired guitarist Steve Clark and a new drummer, the band had grown significantly. They released their first EP, Getcha Rocks Off, on their own label, Bludgeon Riffola, later that year. The EP was a viral sensation, receiving airing on the BBC thanks to word of mouth.

Rick Allen, a 15-year-old British drummer, joined Def Leppard after their debut album Getcha Rocks Off was released, and the band immediately rose to prominence in the UK’s music press. Peter Mensch, AC/manager, DC’s helped them land a deal with Mercury Records soon after. As a full-length debut, On Through the Night was released in 1980 and immediately became a smash in the United Kingdom and the United States, where it peaked at number 51 on the charts.

As well as doing their own shows, Def Leppard also opened up for Ozzy Osbourne, Sammy Hagar, and Judas Priest on their year-long tour of the United Kingdom and the United States. First platinum album in the United States because to MTV’s significant airplay of “Bringin’ on the Heartbreak” followed by High ‘n’ Dry in 1981

Def Leppard Biography/Wiki

Due to his drunkenness, Pete Willis was sacked from the band and replaced by Phil Collen, a former Girl guitarist, while they were recording the follow-up to High ‘n’ Dry with producer Mutt Lange. As a result, Pyromania, Def Leppard’s debut album in 1983, became an unexpected hit because to MTV’s repeated playing of the songs “Photograph” and “Rock of Ages.” Def Leppard became one of the world’s most popular bands when their album Pyromania sold ten million copies.

However, despite their success, they were about to embark on a period of transition in their careers. When the band returned to the studio following an international tour, producer Lange was unavailable, so they began sessions with Meat Loaf’s Bat Out of Hell composer Jim Steinman. As a result, they turned to Nigel Green, the band’s former engineer, for help. Allen lost his left arm in a New Year’s Eve vehicle accident just one month into the recording process. When an infection developed, the arm had to be amputated.

While Def Leppard’s future was uncertain without a drummer, Allen began learning to play a custom-made electronic drum set manufactured for him by Simmons just a few months after his accident. Within a few months, Lange rejoined the band, and he ordered the band to start from scratch because he deemed the band’s previous recordings to be inferior.

In the summer of 1986, the band returned to the stage in Europe for the Monsters of Rock tour. For the first time in their career, Def Leppard finished their fourth album, Hysteria, in early 1987. With lacklustre reviews, the album was released that spring, with many critics stating that Leppard’s metal roots were sacrificed for sweet pop embellishments. Consequently, Hysteria started slowly, with the first single “Women” failing to catch on, but the release of “Animal” aided the album’s momentum.

With “Armageddon It,” “Love Bites,” “Pour Some Sugar on Me,” and “Hysteria” following, Def Leppard had six straight Top 20 successes in the United States, the last of which came in 1989, two years after the release of the band’s debut single. Teenagers and bands alike were influenced by Def Leppard during those two years; they were high school metal’s kings, dominating the mainstream charts as well as MTV; even Guns N’ Roses’ dirty hard rock influenced them in 1988.
