As a band, Alice in Chains represented both the grunge movement and the Seattle sound of the 1990s. Prior to Alice in Chains’ founding, Jerry Cantrell and Layne Staley were both members of metal bands and released Facelift in 1990, long before Nirvana’s Nevermind propelled the underground into public popularity. Alice in Chains survived in the glorious days of grunge despite their metal links, and it wasn’t just a matter of timing.

In the early ’90s, the band’s style blended with the alternative rock trend. It was Cantrell’s sombre minor-key riffs that were the perfect fit for Staley’s anguished lyrics, creating a sound that was both hard and radio-ready. It had a wide range of uses, too. Alice in Chains became one of the first alt-rock bands of the ’90s to experiment with acoustic-based music, with singles like “No Excuses” and “I Stay Away” after their early grunge smashes “Man in the Box” and “Would?”

The band’s upward trajectory halted in the second half of the 1990s as a result of his abuse, and the downward spiral culminated in his death by suicide in 2002. Alice in Chains was reactivated four years later by Cantrell, drummer Sean Kinney, and bassist Mike Inez, with singer William DuVall, launching an extended second life of recording and touring.

Sleze, a Seattle-based hair metal band with Layne Staley as the lead singer, was the precursor of Alice in Chains. Staley was introduced to Cantrell during a gathering at the rehearsal facility known as the Music Bank a year prior to Sleze’s name change to Alice N Chains in 1986. Cantrell accepted Staley’s invitation to stay at his rented Music Bank unit after the two became friends. Alice N Chains and Cantrell’s band, Diamond Lie, disbanded soon after.

With drummer Sean Kinney and bassist Mike Starr already in the band, Cantrell began looking for a lead singer and held out hope that Staley would join him. During this time, Cantrell agreed to play guitar for Staley’s band in exchange for his friend joining the newly formed band. That was also Staley’s opinion. Alice in Chains formed soon after the funk band disbanded, and this quartet became known as the band.

With Mother Love Bone frequently sharing the bill with Alice in Chains, promoter Randy Hauser saw the potential and funded a demo. Known as The Treehouse Tapes, the demo was discovered by Soundgarden managers Kelly Curtis and Susan Silver, who forwarded it to Columbia Records. With a record deal and a studio session with Jane’s Addiction producer David Jerden, Alice in Chains were ushered into the studio by the label in 1989.

We Die Young was released early in 1990 as a promotional EP targeted at heavy metal fans, and its title track quickly became a hit on rock radio, paving the way for the release of the band’s debut album, Facelift, in August and a tour opening for Iggy Pop shortly thereafter. In January 1991, “Man in the Box” was released as the album’s second single, and Facelift took off after its music video was heavily aired on MTV. After Van Halen requested Alice in Chains as a tour opener in August, the album received its first gold certification in September, and it would go on to receive two platinum certifications later in the year.

Alice In Chains Biography/Wiki

Despite the success of Facelift, Alice in Chains continued to write and record new music for a follow-up album and an acoustic EP titled Sap. in February 1992, Sap was the first all-acoustic album from an alternative rock band. As a result of the success of the film Singles, Alice in Chains also had a brief cameo appearance in the film. The Seattle music scene had exploded by the time the soundtrack for the film Nevermind was released in June 1992, and Alice in Chains were right in the middle of it all thanks to Nirvana’s second album, Nevermind’s unexpected success.

Singles soundtrack and Alice in Chains’ second album, Dirt’s “Would?” became the first singles to reach number one on Billboard’s mainstream rock chart in June 1992, the same month the soundtrack was released. In September, Dirt was released, and “Them Bones,” the second single from the album, marked Alice in Chains’ first entry into the Billboard alternative rock chart.

Dirt, Alice in Chains’ breakthrough album, arrived at the height of the grunge craze in 1992. “Angry Chair” and “Rooster” and “Down in a Hole” helped keep the album at the top of the charts through the end of the year, as did “Rooster” and “Down in a Hole,” which were both Top 10 mainstream rock successes at the time.
