Dan Sullivan Wiki/Bio
Daniel Scott Sullivan (born November 13, 1964) is an American politician and attorney who has served as Alaska’s junior senator since 2015. He is a Republican Party supporter.
From 1993 to 1997, 2004 to 2006, and 2009 and 2013, Sullivan served in the United States Marine Corps. He clerked for judges on the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit and the Alaska Supreme Court between 1997 and 1999. Sullivan travelled to Maryland to work for the Bush administration after working as an attorney in private practise in Anchorage, Alaska from 2000 to 2002.
He worked with the National Economic Council and the National Security Council, and then served as Assistant Secretary of State for Economic and Business Affairs. From 2009 to 2010, he served as Alaska Attorney General, and from 2010 to 2013, he served as Commissioner of the Alaska Department of Natural Resources.
Career
Sullivan campaigned for the United States Senate seat held by Democratic incumbent Mark Begich in 2014. He defeated Alaska Lieutenant Governor Mead Treadwell and 2010 Senate contender Joe Miller in the Republican primary in August 2014. Sullivan won the general election by a margin of 6,014 votes out of 282,400 cast, defeating Begich 47.96 percent to 45.83 percent. In 2020, he was re-elected by a margin of around 13 percentage points over independent rival Al Gross.
Sullivan was born and reared in Fairview Park, Ohio, the son of Sandra (née Simmons) and Thomas C. Sullivan, who is currently the president and CEO of RPM International, which his father, Frank C. Sullivan, founded. In 1983, he graduated from Indiana’s Culver Military Academy.
Sullivan earned a Bachelor of Arts in economics with honours from Harvard University in 1987. He graduated from Georgetown University with a dual J.D. and M.S.F.S. degree cum laude in 1993. He interned at the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit and was a member of the Georgetown Law Journal.
Since 1993, Sullivan has been a member of the United States Marine Corps, both on active duty and in the reserves. Sullivan, who spent several years with an Anchorage-based reconnaissance unit, first left active service in 1997 when he went to Alaska, but has since been recalled three times: from 2004 to 2006, early 2009, and for a six-week tour in Afghanistan in July 2013.
In 2011, then-retired General John Abizaid, a board member of the Sullivan family’s RPM International firm since 2008, nominated him for promotion to lieutenant colonel. Sullivan is now a colonel in the Reserve Marine Corps of the United States. The Defense Meritorious Service Medal has been awarded to him.
