CM Mamata Banerjee Wiki/Bio
Banerjee was born on 5 January 1955, in the West Bengal city of Kolkata. Promileswar Banerjee and Gayetri Devi were her parents. Banerjee’s father, Promileswar, died when she was 17 due to a lack of medical attention.
Banerjee graduated from Deshbandhu Sishu Sikshalay with a higher secondary school diploma in 1970. Jogamaya Devi College awarded her a bachelor’s degree in history. She went on to the University of Calcutta for her master’s degree in Islamic studies.
He earned an education degree from Shri Shikshayatan College and a law degree from Kolkata’s Jogesh Chandra Chaudhuri Law College. She was also awarded an honorary doctorate from Bhubaneswar’s Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology. Calcutta University has awarded her a Doctorate in Literature (D.Litt.) degree.
Career
Banerjee started her political career as a young woman in the Congress party in the 1970s. In 1975, she made headlines when she danced on the car of socialist leader and politician Jayaprakash Narayan in a show of defiance. She soon rose through the ranks of the local Congress party, and from 1976 to 1980, she served as the general secretary of the Mahila Congress (Indira) in West Bengal.
Banerjee became one of India’s youngest parliamentarians when she won the Jadavpur parliamentary constituency in West Bengal in 1984, beating veteran Communist politician Somnath Chatterjee. In 1984, she was elected general secretary of the Indian Youth Congress. In the 1989 general elections, she was defeated by Malini Bhattacharya of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) in an anti-Congress surge. Since settling into the Calcutta South constituency, she was re-elected in the 1991 general elections. In the general elections of 1996, 1998, 1999, 2004, and 2009, she held the Kolkata South seat.
Prime Minister P. V. Narasimha Rao appointed Banerjee as Union Minister of State for Human Resources Development, Youth Affairs and Sports, and Women and Child Development in 1991. She declared her resignation as sports minister and held a rally at the Brigade Parade Ground in Kolkata to protest the government’s lack of interest in her plan to develop sports in the country. In 1993, she was relieved of her portfolios. She said in April 1996 that the Congress was acting as a stooge of the CPI-M in West Bengal.
Banerjee began her political career when she was just 15 years old. She formed Chhatra Parishad Unions, the student arm of the Congress (I) Party, while at Jogamaya Devi College, beating the All India Democratic Students Organisation associated with the Socialist Unity Centre of India (Communist). She remained active in West Bengal’s Congress (I) Party, holding various positions within the party and in other local political organisations.
The All India Trinamool Congress secured a landslide two-thirds majority in the 2016 assembly elections, with Mamata Banerjee securing 211 seats out of a total of 293, and being re-elected as Chief Minister of West Bengal for a second time. The All India Trinamool Congress secured an improved majority by contesting alone, becoming the first ruling party to win in West Bengal without an ally since 1962.
The All India Trinamool Congress secured a landslide two-thirds victory in the 2021 assembly elections. However, Mamata Banerjee, who ran from Nandigram, lost by over 1700 votes to Suvendu Adhikari of the Bharatiya Janata Party. She was re-elected as Chief Minister of West Bengal for the third time, securing 212 seats out of a total of 290. She later handed in her resignation to Jagdeep Dhankhar at Raj Bhawan.
