Chris Coons, full name Christopher Andrew Coons, is an American politician who was elected to the United States Senate as a Democrat in 2010 and began representing Delaware later that year. He was born on September 9, 1963, in Greenwich, Connecticut.
Coons grew up in Hockessin, Delaware, a suburb of Wilmington. He went to Amherst College, where he got a bachelor’s degree in political science and chemistry in 1985, after attending preparatory school. Coons, who received a Truman scholarship, spent his junior year in Kenya, studying at the University of Nairobi. Coons went on to Yale University, where he earned a master’s degree in religion from Yale Divinity School and a doctorate in law from Yale Law School in 1992.
Coons worked in Ronald Reagan’s 1980 presidential campaign and Delaware Senator William Roth’s 1982 Senate campaign as a teenager; both candidates were Republicans. Coons, on the other hand, switched to the Democratic Party in the mid-1980s. He became legal counsel to a Delaware textile manufacturer in 1996, after working in South Africa and for a charity group that cared for the homeless. He married Annie Lingenfelter in the same year, and the couple went on to have three children.
Career
Coons began his political career when he was elected to the New Castle County Council in Delaware in 2000. In 2005, he was elected county executive and served until 2010. In a special election to fill a vacancy in the United States Senate that year, he defeated controversial Tea Party contender Christine O’Donnell by nearly 17 points.
Coons gained a reputation as a moderate Democrat after taking office in November 2010, supporting abortion rights, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, and other widely held party stances while occasionally defying them, as well as President Barack Obama. Much of his criticism of Obama’s administration centred on foreign policy, particularly the administration’s reaction to the Syrian Civil War. Coons was a driving force behind the passing of various bills protecting women’s and children’s rights. He devoted himself to measures for job creation and the restoration of domestic manufacturing while on the Senate Appropriations Committee.
