This was not the city’s first professional baseball franchise. Batavia received a franchise from Pittston, Pennsylvania in the New York State League as early as 1897. Auburn, Canandaigua, Lyons, Palmyra, and Cortland were also members of the league that year.
The Batavians, who wore crimson uniforms and were occasionally referred to as the Batavia Reds, played their home games on a pitch constructed on Swan Street but were unable to compete during the season. A pitiful squad, it went 9-0 before defeating Canandaigua 11-5. Despite the fact that managers and players were changed, performance did not improve.
Batavia was mired in obscurity. At the end of July, the players refused to play without compensation, citing a record of eleven wins and thirty-three losses. Batavia fans were adamant about not paying even the ten-cent admission fee to witness awful baseball.

Both were modelled after Rochester’s Red Wing Stadium, which was erected in 1929 by the Major League St. Louis Cardinals. The diamond at State Street Park was described as being comparable to a professional playing field. Following meetings in Olean, Batavia, and Buffalo, a Class D professional baseball league was founded, consisting of six teams: Olean, Batavia, Niagara Falls, and Jamestown in New York State, Bradford, Pennsylvania, and Hamilton, Ontario Canada. The league’s foundation was ratified at a meeting in Batavia on January 8, 1939, making Batavia the genesis of the Pennsylvania, Ontario New York League, today’s NY-Penn League.
Major James J. Mahaney of Batavia acquired extra Works Projects Administration funding to enclose the ballpark with a wooden fence and build an 800-seat roofed grandstand. The ballpark project employed seventeen local men. The fence and grandstand, on the other hand, remained unfinished on opening day, May 10, 1939; the outfield was enclosed with a snow fence.
Seating was provided by folding chairs taken from a local mortuary. These interim precautions had no effect on the nearly 3,000-strong opening day attendance, the greatest baseball audience in Batavia’s history. The Clippers were defeated 9 to 4 by Jamestown.
P-O-N-Y was suggested as the new league title by Batavian Joseph M. Ryan, with the letters standing for Pennsylvania, Ontario, and New York. Mr. Ryan was the club’s first president. In 1956, the league’s name was changed to the current New York-Pennsylvania Professional Baseball League. The league was founded as a Class D league and was later reclassified as a short-season Class A league, which is still its classification today.
Batavia was a charter member and a stalwart of the league until 1954-1956 and 1960 when it was forced to withdraw due to financial constraints.
In 1945, 1946, and 1963, Batavia won league championships. The team has had big-league affiliations with the Cleveland Indians, Chicago White Sox, Detroit Tigers, Pittsburgh Pirates, New York Mets, and Philadelphia Phillies over the years. Clippers, Indians, Pirates, Trojans, and, since 1998, Muckdogs have been their nicknames.

Gene Baker, a former Major League infielder, was chosen as manager of the Class D Batavia Pirates on June 20, 1961, while the team was affiliated with the Pittsburgh Pirates. He guided them to a runner-up finish.

Gordon “Bus” Merrill of Elba was the first, in 1939, and Mickey Hyde of East Bethany was the most recent, in 1989; both were outfielders. Mr Dwyer died in 1995 when he was 92 years old. He had continued to attend games until his health caused him to be unable to do so.
