Buffalo may not be the first city that comes to mind when you think about baseball; you’re more likely to conjure up images of early 1990s Buffalo Bills teams or, even better, Buffalo wings. However, Buffalo has a long history with professional baseball than almost any other city in the country. As the Blue Jays make their way to their new home, let’s take a look back at some of the best moments.

Indeed, two consecutive seasons with 46 victories. James “Pud” Galvin, a Hall of Fame pitcher who resembles a neighborhood pastry maker more than a major league pitcher, accomplished the feat twice with the National League’s Buffalo Bisons in 1883 (46-29) and ’84. (46-22).

In just six and a half seasons with the franchise, the right-hander racked up 218 victories, 381 complete games, and more than 3,000 innings worked. His nickname was “Pud” because he resembled pudding with his batters, however, I’m sure his arm felt the same way by the conclusion of his career. He’d eventually become the first player in baseball history to win 300 games.

If winning 46 games fatigued your arm, how about 60? In 1884, Old Hoss Radbourn set an unbreakable record for Providence. That season, he went 60-12 with a 1.38 ERA, 73 complete games, 678 2/3 innings, and 441 strikeouts. Radbourn started and finished 40 of the Grays’ past 43 games, including a stretch of 20 consecutive games. He single-handedly pitched his club to a league championship, winning all three games. His arm was in excruciating pain and he could hardly lift it to comb his hair.

However, Radbourn made his Major League debut with the Bisons in 1880. He appeared in six games as a position player for the team, three at second base and three in the outfield. In 21 at-bats, he had three hits. Buffalo reportedly terminated him after one season due to his excessive practicing and self-injury. Of course, Old Hoss lives on through his endearing Twitter account. The following sentence from the Buffalo Press sums it up perfectly: “[Buffalo] sent it all over and outside the pastures until the fielders’ legs grew tired and their courage wore thin.”

However, one guy sent it over the top better than the others: Curry Foley of the Bisons. He opened the game with a grand slam, followed by a triple in the second, a single in the third, and a double in the fifth, completing the first cycle in major league history. Newspapers gushed, “Never has anything like it been seen before,” and they were correct. From 1951 to 1955, the Negro League Indianapolis Clowns competed at Buffalo’s Offerman Stadium, winning three league championships.

They were a baseball equivalent of the Harlem Globetrotters, blasting baseballs, sprinting from first to third base, and trotting around the bases backward. The team featured future Major Leaguers such as Choo-Choo Coleman, Globetrotters such as “Goose” Tatum, and some of the league’s first female players like as Toni Stone, Mamie “Peanut” Johnson, and Connie Morgan.

However, major baseball activity was imminent in 1952: A Milwaukee Braves scout was in town “in search of the next Jackie Robinson.” Players pointed to a newly signed adolescent named Henry Aaron; the Braves signed him, and two years later, he was smashing home runs in the majors.

Galvin threw two no-hitters during his career with the Buffalo Bills, but he previously received a paragraph. Apologies, Pud. This no-hitter came more than a century later with the Buffalo Bisons of the Minor Leagues. Richie Sexson started at first base and Enrique Wilson at second base for this no-hitter. This no-hitter was courtesy of the 24-year-old Bartolo Colon’s magical arm.

Colon walked the game’s second batter and then retired 25 consecutive batters, fanning eight on 112 pitches. He went on to win 247 games, struck out 2,535 batters, and establish himself as one of the sport’s best sluggers.

Buffalo Bisons Biography/Wiki

However, there was one who approached his time with the Bisons as though every night was a home run derby. He is the son of a Hall of Famer, but he has the potential to be even greater than his father. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is his name. Fortunately for all of us, Guerrero remains a Blue Jay and will return to the spot where he dominated for 39 games over the course of two seasons. He’ll be quite at ease, which may make him even better. Who should not be at ease? They are the ones who take the risk of parking just beyond the left-field fence.

Today’s Bisons date all the way back to 1979 when the city’s then-Eastern League AA team was formed following a brief baseball layoff. At the time, the team was an affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates and played at War Memorial Stadium in the downtown area. The Bisons were bounced from MLB parent club to MLB parent club like few others in history in the following years. After spending the 1982 season with the Pirates, the Bisons were acquired by the Cleveland Indians for the 1983 and 1984 seasons.

Following that, the Chicago White Sox took over in 1985 and 1986, Cleveland took over again in 1987, and Pittsburgh took over again from 1988 to 1994. Are you still perplexed? Pittsburgh, not to be outdone, took over the Bisons in a period that lasted from 1995 to 2008. Since the 2009 season, the Bisons have served as the New York Mets’ affiliate.
