American Express Company, an American financial services company specialising in the issuance of credit cards, payment processing, and travel-related services worldwide. The company’s headquarters are located in New York.
The original company was founded on March 18, 1850, through the consolidation of three companies engaged in the express transportation of goods, valuables, and specie between New York City and Buffalo, New York, and points throughout the Midwest: (1) Livingston, Fargo & Company (formerly Western Express), founded in 1845 by Henry Wells and William G. Fargo, later of Wells Fargo fame; (2) Wells & Co. (formerly L&F); and (3) Wells & Co. (formerly L&F). American Express began as an unincorporated organisation of stockholders led by Wells & Fargo. By the end of the American Civil War, its company had expanded to about 900 locations in ten states, prompting the foundation of Merchants Union Express Company in 1866. Two years later, on the edge of financial exhaustion, the two companies united to establish the American Merchants Union Express Company, with Fargo succeeding as president. In 1873, the corporation was renamed the American Express Company.
After Fargo’s death in 1881, his younger brother, James Congdell Fargo (1829–1915), took over as president and led the company for the next 33 years, pioneering innovations such as the American Express Money Order (1882) and the American Express Travelers Cheque (1891), as well as opening the company’s first European office in Paris (1895). International expansion continued with the establishment of offices in additional European nations, including England (1896) and Germany (1898), and the corporation expanded into Argentina, Brazil, China, Japan, Egypt, and India in the early 1900s. When the federal government of the United States nationalised the express industry in 1918, combining all domestic express operations into the American Railway Express Company (see REA Express, Inc.), American Express focused almost entirely on its banking operations and its relatively new travel services, launched in 1915.
In 1958, American Express introduced the iconic green charge card. American Express broadened its assets from the 1960s to the 1980s by purchasing businesses in investment banking, insurance, and publishing. In 1968, it acquired Fireman’s Fund Insurance Company (which was spun off in 1985), in 1981, it acquired Shearson Loeb Rhoades, Inc., a leading brokerage firm (which was sold in 1993), and in 1984, it acquired Investors Diversified Services, Inc., a large Minneapolis-based insurance, mutual fund, and financial advisory firm (spun off in 2005 as Ameriprise Financial, Inc.).
American Express is a market leader in the provision of credit cards for individuals, small businesses, and corporations. Travel-related services offered by the corporation include traveler’s checks, credit cards, corporate and personal travel planning services, tour packages, and reservation agencies for hotels and auto rentals. By the early twenty-first century, American Express had expanded to over 40 countries. Additionally, the corporation included a publishing branch that published periodicals such as Travel & Leisure and Food & Wine. It was, however, sold to Time Inc. in 2013.
