Henry Ford and 11 associate partners started Ford Motor Company in 1903. In 1919, the firm was reincorporated, with Ford, his wife Clara, and their son Edsel assuming entire ownership; they, their successors, and the Ford Foundation (founded 1936) were only proprietors until January 1956, when the first public offering of common stock occurred. The company makes passenger automobiles, light vehicles, and tractors, in addition to automotive components and accessories. The company’s headquarters are located in Dearborn, Michigan.

Henry Ford, the Ford Motor Company’s founder, was born in 1863 on a farm in Dearborn, Michigan. He possessed an aptitude for engineering, which he followed as a hobby beginning in his youth, although he did not begin his engineering profession as an employee of the Detroit Edison Company until 1890. Ford experimented with gasoline engines in his leisure time and finished his first gasoline buggy in 1892. In 1896, dissatisfied with the weight of the buggy, he sold it to help fund the creation of a new automobile. Ford’s supervisors at the electric business believed his hobby distracted him from his normal job, and he was forced to resign in 1899, despite his elevation to chief engineer.

Ford founded the Detroit Automobile Company shortly afterwards, with financial backing from private investors. He later exited the firm following a disagreement with business associates about the number and price of cars to be manufactured. Ford argued for a business plan that combined a reduced profit margin on each car with increased volume production. By doing so, he aimed to increase market share while maintaining profitability.

Henry Ford developed two four-cylinder, 80-horsepower race cars, the 999 and the Arrow, independently in a small shed in Detroit. These cars won multiple races and helped Ford establish a new market. Henry Ford opened a new shop on June 16, 1903, with $28,000 in funds gathered from friends and neighbours. The Ford Motor Company commenced manufacturing of the Model A in this facility, a converted waggon factory on Mack Avenue in Detroit. In its first year of existence, the company produced 1,708 of these models

The Ford Motor Company was sued by the Licensed Association of Automobile Manufacturers, an industrial conglomerate that had patent rights to road locomotives powered by internal combustion engines. Ford responded by taking the case to court, saying that George B. Selden’s 1895 patent was invalid. Ford continued to manufacture automobiles throughout the lengthy adjudication process and relocated to a larger facility on Piquette and Beaubien Streets. On August 17, 1904, a Canadian plant was constructed in Walkerville, Ontario.

Ford recognised that the average worker performed multiple tasks and used a variety of tools during the assembly line’s development. He increased productivity by assigning each worker to a single task using a single tool. The employee worked on a component that was conveyed to him on a moving belt, and once a predetermined amount of time was allowed for the task to be completed, the component was carried on to the next operation. Slower employees were therefore required to raise their labour rate in order to maintain the production rate specified by the belt speed.

Ford’s legal battle with the Selden group resulted in a Supreme Court judgement in 1911, eight years after the initial suit was filed. The Court invalidated the Selden patent. The judgement relieved numerous automotive manufacturers of prohibitively expensive licencing requirements; it also allowed others to enter the sector.

Henry Ford and his engineers created various automobiles, each labelled with an alphabetical letter; these included the compact four-cylinder Model N (which sold for $500) and the more opulent six-cylinder Model K (which sold for a pittance at $2,500). The Model K’s failure, combined with Henry Ford’s insistence in manufacturing affordable mass-produced automobiles, resulted in a feud between Ford and his partner Alexander Malcolmson. The latter, who assisted in founding the company in 1903, quit and Henry Ford obtained his stake of the corporation. Ford owned 58.5 percent of the company at the time. Ford appointed John S. Gray, a Detroit financier, as president of the firm in 1906, further consolidating his power.

Ford introduced the sturdy and practical Model T in October 1908, amid ongoing litigation with the Selden syndicate. Ford was compelled to expand its production facilities due to the high demand for this vehicle. In 1909, almost 10,000 Model Ts were constructed. Henry Ford, able to vote down company companions who preferred more traditional methods of production, adapted his assembly line manufacturing approach to the Model T.
