Ace Hardware Corporation is the United States’ second largest dealer-owned cooperative. The co-op pools purchasing and promotional efforts for its 5,100 neighbourhood hardware, home centre, and lumber stores situated in all fifty states and 65 other countries and territories. Ace’s emphasis on service and current retailing tactics has enabled independently owned and run Ace stores to compete against such home improvement behemoths as Home Depot and Builders Square. The co-op develops its own range of paints and also distributes other Ace-branded items.

Richard Hesse, Frank Burke, Oscar Fisher, E. Gunnard Linquist, and William Stauber formed the Ace Hardware organisation in the early 1920s to develop a purchasing and advertising alliance among their Chicago-area hardware companies. Their joint purchasing power enabled the store owners to negotiate cheaper pricing from wholesalers on items. In 1927, the partners chose the name Ace and incorporated the following year.

Within two years, Ace had developed into a wholesaler, sourcing items directly from manufacturers and storing it in its own Chicago warehouse. This approach further decreased costs by eliminating’middlemen’ wholesalers, allowing Ace members the option of gaining a competitive edge (by lowering retail prices) or increasing margins (They could maintain their prices and enjoy higher profits). Frank Burke served as the organization’s president briefly before being superseded by Richard Hesse in 1930. Hesse held that position for over four decades, until his death in 1973.

Ace was largely a standard wholesale group during the first half-century of its existence, with profits split among stockholders. The group’s low-cost purchasing and distribution strategies drew new members and franchisees immediately. During the organization’s early years, use of the Ace moniker was encouraged but not required; it would eventually become mandatory for new affiliates.

President Hesse extended services to associates, including a semi-annual dealer convention showcasing the wholesaler’s products and incentives. These gatherings persisted well into the 1990s. By the mid-1930s, the association had grown to 41 dealer/members with over $650,000 in sales. Indeed, growth was so rapid during that decade that the company’s burgeoning roster of affiliates demanded double storage capacity.

America’s ‘do-it-yourself’ (DIY) revolution began in the postwar era. Numerous factors have been attributed to this market’s meteoric expansion by industry analysts. To begin, the relatively high cost of new homes compelled people to seek out widely available, but frequently neglected, existing homes.

Due to the hefty fees charged by repairmen and contractors, homeowners began attempting house repair and improvement projects on their own. Additionally, the development of new tools and goods that were simple to use aided the tendency. Finally, some observers of the DIY movement have cited the more intangible, but unquestionably significant, sense of satisfaction felt by consumers who successfully completed a project while saving money.

Ace’s nationwide revenues climbed to $25 million by the end of the 1950s, owing to expanding DIY sales. In 1969, the company established its first distribution hubs outside of Chicago. A California facility handled the growing membership on the West Coast, while an Atlanta warehouse facilitated growth in the south. These were the first of fourteen retail assistance centres that were established throughout the country by 1994.

Richard Hesse, co-founder and long-time president, sold Ace to its member-dealers in 1973, so establishing a dealer-owned hardware cooperative. Membership required the purchase of a minimum share in Ace, and dealers donated a percentage of their co-op sales to a national advertising fund.

Ace’s profits were returned to dealer-owners through cash or stock rebates at year’s end under this new system. The corporation opened its fourth distribution centre in Toledo, Ohio, and extended its corporate offices the following year in Oak Brook, Illinois (a western suburb of Chicago). By 1976, when Ace’s ownership was totally transferred to its dealers, the organization’s sales had surpassed $382 million. Ace’s board of directors has always been comprised of dealers from that time.
