On July 18, 1968, the firm was incorporated as N M Electronics (the letters stand for Noyce Moore), but shortly changed its name to Intel, which is derived from the first syllables of ‘integrated electronics.’ Before going public in 1971, Intel raised an additional $2 million in financing.

Intel manufactured the 3101 Schottky bipolar memory, a high-speed random access memory (RAM) chip, within a few months of its founding. The next year, Intel developed the 1103, a one-Kilobyte (K) dynamic RAM, or DRAM, chip that was the first large enough to store substantial amounts of data. Intel finally had a processor that could truly replace magnetic cores with the 1103, and DRAMs eventually proved vital to the personal computer.
The business had the greatest impact on the computer industry when it introduced the 4004, the world’s first microprocessor, in 1971. The microprocessor, like many of Intel’s breakthroughs, was a result of efforts to create another technology. When Busicom, a Japanese calculator maker, contacted Intel to design cost-effective chips for a series of calculators, Intel engineer Ted Hoff was assigned to the project; during his search for a cost-effective design, Hoff conceived the idea for a central processing unit (CPU) on a single chip. The 4004, which packed 2,300 transistors onto a one-eighth-by-one-sixth-inch chip, had the computing power of the 3,000-cubic-foot ENIAC, which relied on 38,000 vacuum tubes.
Although Intel initially envisioned the microprocessor as a computer improvement that would enable users to add additional memory to their units, the microprocessor’s enormous potential—for anything from calculators to cash registers and traffic lights—became obvious fairly quickly. Intel facilitated the applications with the launch of the 8008, an 8-bit microprocessor developed alongside the 4004 but geared on data and character processing rather than arithmetic.
The 8080 was the first genuinely general-purpose microprocessor when it was launched in 1974. Intel sold a whole computer on a single chip for $360, while conventional computers cost thousands of dollars. The response has been overwhelmingly positive. The 8080 quickly became the industry standard, with Intel dominating the 8-bit market.
Intel launched the 8085, a faster chip with more features, in response to the increasing competition in the manufacture of 8-bit microprocessors.
