Steven Soderbergh Wiki/Bio
He has worked in a wide range of genres, directing both esoteric indie films and mainstream box office hits. His full name is Steven Andrew Soderbergh and he was born on January 14, 1963, in Atlanta, Georgia, United States.
At the time of his birth, Soderbergh’s father was a professor and administrator at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where Soderbergh grew up. When Soderbergh was still in high school, he participated in a university course on film animation and began making short films. He traveled to Hollywood after high school to try to make it as a screenwriter, but he was turned down. A further 12 months saw him back in his hometown of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, writing and filming more low-budget shorts.
In 1986, Soderbergh’s luck changed when the rock band Yes asked him to do a full-length promotional video for them. This modest beginning gave him the confidence to try his luck again in Hollywood. Sextape and videotape (1989) is one of his most well-known works. It delves into the difficulties of modern relationships.
That year, the film was an unexpected triumph at Cannes, winning three trophies, including the Palme d’Or, and earning Soderbergh an Academy Award nod for his original script. However, Kafka (1991), King of the Hill (1993), and The Underneath (1995) did not get as much acclaim as the previous works. Gray’s Anatomy (1996), a filmed monologue by Spalding Gray, and the experimental comedy Schizopolis (1996), in which he also featured, were Soderbergh’s next departures from standard narrative filmmaking.
George Clooney and Jennifer Lopez star in Soderbergh’s 1998 film Out of Sight, about a bank heist and an odd romance that develops between the two leads. Similar praises were accorded to the gritty mobster story The Limey (1999). With the release of Erin Brockovich and Traffic in 2000, Soderbergh became a well-known director.
The former was based on the true tale of Julia Roberts, a woman who finds that a power company is poisoning the groundwater in a small town and helps the inhabitants in a successful lawsuit. Julia Roberts. From consumers to law enforcement officers, traffickers’ lives are shown in this pseudo-documentary called Traffic. Soderbergh was nominated for best director for both of these films at the Academy Awards; he took home the trophy for Traffic.
Several of Hollywood’s most well-known actors, including George Clooney, Brad Pitt, and Matt Damon, starred in Steven Soderbergh’s 2002 adaptation of the 1960 film Ocean’s Eleven, a crime caper. With Ocean’s Twelve (2004) and Ocean’s Thirteen (2007), the franchise was a huge success.
Director Steven Soderbergh returned to the dramatic genre with Bubble (2005), a film about three factory workers (one of whom is eventually murdered) following the critical failures of Full Frontal and Solaris. Amateur actors starred in the picture, which was released in theatres, on cable television, and on DVD all at once. A drama starring political advisers James Carville and Mary Matalin as fictionalized versions of their real-life counterparts, he also produced the television series K Street (2003) during this time period
The Good German was yet another example of Soderbergh’s penchant for experimenting (2006). An early studio movie, shot in black-and-white, depicts the story of a wartime reporter (Clooney) reporting the Potsdam Conference while also trying to track down an old flame (Cate Blanchett).
After that, Soderbergh launched his biopic of Argentinian revolutionary Che Guevara, which starred Benicio del Toro as the lead character, and was directed by him. Che (2008), which was originally intended to be two films, was eventually released as one picture, Che Part One: The Argentine, and two separate films, Che Part Two: Guerrilla. First, we see Che Guevara’s role in the Cuban Revolution, and then we follow him as he makes an unsuccessful revolt in Bolivia.
Sasha Grey, a pornographic actress, played a prostitute in The Girlfriend Experience (2009). Despite the intriguing premise, the story revolves around the mundane activities of the main character. Soderbergh executive-produced the television series adaptation of the film (2016–).
A true-crime comedy about a dishonest whistleblower, The Informant!, was directed by Steven Soderbergh in 2009. (Damon). A documentary about Spalding Gray’s life was followed in 2010, followed by the large-scale ensemble thriller Contagion (2011) about a deadly airborne virus’ rapid spread. An exhilarating action-packed spy thriller, Haywire (2011) starred a female covert operative.
A comedy about the world of male stripping, Magic Mike, directed by Steven Soderbergh was a blockbuster in 2012. Next, he directed Side Effects, a thriller about a woman who becomes addicted to antidepressants and faces criminal charges, and Behind the Candelabra, about the late 1970s love affair between Liberace (Michael Douglas) and a young man (Adam) in the entertainment industry. In the end, it was produced and directed by Steven Soderbergh for HBO’s cable network, but it was released theatrically in other countries.
And yet Soderbergh declared his retirement from filmmaking in 2013, saying he was tired of being treated unfairly because of his success. The Knick (2014–15), a drama about a New York City hospital in the early part of the 20th century, became his new focus. He returned to cinemas, though, in 2017 with Logan Lucky, an action-comedy about two brothers who plan to rob a NASCAR racetrack together.
After that, he directed Netflix’s basketball drama High Flying Bird (2019) and the farce about the Panama Papers leak, The Laundromat (2019), both starring Meryl Streep. he reconnected with the actress in Let Them All Talk (2020), about an award-winning author who goes on vacation with several old acquaintances on a cruise ship Don Cheadle and Benicio Del Toro starred in Steven Soderbergh’s next film, No Sudden Move (2021), about small-time crooks in 1950s Detroit.
In 1999, Soderbergh wrote a memoir titled Getting Away with It: or, The Further Adventures of the Luckiest Bastard You Ever Saw.
Any of the year awards were given out in the United States for great work in television, such as an Emmy. Emmy is a nickname for the image orthicon, a camera tube used in television, which is where the name Immy comes from. In order to reflect both art and science, the Emmy Award trophy features a soaring woman holding aloft an electron.
Only members of the academy are eligible to vote for the awards, and members can only vote for members in the same discipline as themselves. A variety of awards are given out for different types of television shows such as dramatic and comedic ones, as well as special dramas and limited series. Best actor and actress, lead and supporting actor/actress, director, and writer are selected in each of these categories.
The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences was established in 1946, and the first Emmy Awards were given out in 1949. There were six awards given out that year. A separate ceremony was established for news and documentaries in 1973 and was followed by separate ceremonies for daytime and nighttime programs from 1974 on.
In the United States, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) in Beverly Hills gives out a variety of prizes each year, including the Oscar, to honor outstanding performances in the film business. A gold-plated statuette known as an Oscar was awarded to victors when the awards were first presented in 1929.
In addition to the 24 categories listed above, there are also awards given in the following areas: best picture, acting, directing, original screenplay, adapted screenplay, cinematography, production design and editing, original score, original song, costume and hair design, make-up and hairstyling as well as foreign language films. The winners are announced at the Academy Awards ceremony on February 24. Additionally, the academy gives out scientific and technical awards, as well as honorary awards, the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, the Irving G.
Thalberg Memorial Award for excellence in production, and the Gordon E. Sawyer Award for technological contributions, though none of these are given out every year. A new yearly category for “exceptional accomplishment in popular film” was established by the academy in August of last year, and it will make its debut at the 2019 awards show. The academy, on the other hand, chose to delay the launch of the new category due to backlash and misunderstanding.
For a film to be eligible for an award, it must be shown for at least one week at a commercial theatre in Los Angeles County between January 1 and December 31 at midnight that year, for paid admission. There are certain exceptions to this rule, such as foreign-language films that are submitted by the country in which they were made and have not yet been seen in the US. Unlike music awards, which are submitted by the musical artist, eligibility standards for documentaries and short films are different, and they must be officially filed by their producers.
