Shubman Gill was born in Fazilka, Punjab, on September 8, 1999. He did his schooling at the Manav Mangal Smart School in Punjab. He showed an interest in cricket at a very young age, which his family understood very well and gave him the environment he wanted.
Gill’s father said Shubman had been passionate about cricket since he was three years old. Since he was three years old, he only played cricket. There will be children of that age playing with toys. He never asked for stuff like that. For him, it was just the bat and the ball. He used to sleep with a bat and a ball,’ said Lakhwinder Singh, the father of Gill.
There were no proper cricket facilities in Fazilka, so his family moved to Mohali and rented a house near the Cricket Association of Punjab (PCA). At the age of 8, he was enrolled in the PCA and that’s how his cricket journey began. In Fazilka, Punjab, Shubman Gill was born. There, his family-owned agricultural land. His father, an agriculturist, Lakhwinder Singh, wanted to become a cricketer, but could not fulfill his dream. He wanted to make Gill a good cricketer instead. At an early age, he noticed the cricketing potential of his son and accepted the opportunity to change his capacity for cricketing. To help him practice batting, he would ask the hired help on the farm to throw balls at Shubman. Convinced of his talent, Gill’s father moved the family to Mohali and rented a house near the PCA Stadium.
He hit an unbeaten double-century in the Vijay Merchant Trophy on his Under-16 state debut for Punjab. He scored 351 runs in Punjab’s Inter-District Under-16 competition in 2014 and shared with Nirmal Singh a record opening stand of 587 runs.
His father played an important part in his path to cricket. His dad also wanted to become a cricketer but was unable to become a cricketer for some reason. That’s why his father began his education on his own and taught him the fundamentals of cricket.
On 25 February 2017, he made his List A debut for Punjab in the 2016-17 Vijay Hazare Trophy. On 17 November 2017, he made his first-class debut for Punjab in the 2017-18 Ranji Trophy. Later the same month, he scored his maiden century in his second first-class match, batting for Punjab against Services. He was acquired in the 2018 IPL auction by the Kolkata Knight Riders for $1.8 crore (US$250,000) in January 2018. He made his Twenty20 debut on 14 April 2018 for Kolkata Knight Riders in the 2018 Indian Premier League.
He was called for the 2018–19 Deodhar Trophy in India C’s squad in October 2018. He scored an unbeaten century in the final round-robin match, against India A, to help send India C through to the final. He was named as one of eight players to watch ahead of the 2018–19 Ranji Trophy the following month. In December 2018, Gill scored his maiden double century in first-class cricket, scoring 268 runs during Punjab’s match against Tamil Nadu in the Ranji Trophy. On the fourth day of the match against Hyderabad in the Ranji Trophy on 25 December 2018, with Punjab needing 338 runs from 57 overs, Gill scored 148 off 154 balls to take his side to victory almost single-handedly. The game ended as a draw, with Punjab finishing the run chase in 57 overs at 324/8.
Gill had scored 990 runs in first-class cricket by 1 January 2019, from fourteen innings across eight games. He scored his 1,000th run in first-class cricket one week later, in his fifteenth innings. In the 2018-19 Ranji Trophy, he was the top run-scorer for Punjab, with 728 runs in five matches. In March 2019, ahead of the 2019 Indian Premier League tournament, he was named one of eight players to watch by the International Cricket Council (ICC). He also received the 2019 Indian Premier League Emerging Player of the Tournament award.
For the 2019-20 Duleep Trophy, he was named as the captain of the India Blue team in August 2019. In October 2019, for the 2019–20 Deodhar Trophy, Gill was selected as the captain of the India C team. In November 2019, in the tournament, he became the youngest cricketer to lead aside. He was 20 years and 57 days old, breaking Virat Kohli’s record during the 2009-10 tournament when he was 21 years and 124 days old.
