Philip Defranco was born on December 1, 1985, in The Bronx, New York City, New York. His stepmother is employed at a car dealership. Phil ran away from home because of his cruel stepfather and drunken mother. Since having sex with his boss, he was suspended from his job at a movie theatre. He was arrested after breaking up with his girlfriend and selling bootleg DVDs on eBay to make up the extra money. Phil used his USF student loan to buy a computer and a camera after he arrived in Florida. He has Italian ancestors.
He attended the University of South Florida, Asheville–Buncombe Technical Community College, and East Carolina University as a biology student and then as a sophomore. Phil lived in Tampa, Florida, and then Atlanta, Georgia, in 2007. When producing videos in 2007, he also served as a waiter in a few restaurants.
DeFranco stayed in a car until he moved back to Tampa, Florida, with his father on the condition that he return to college, which he did not. DeFranco contracted polycystic kidney disease from his father and grandparents. Sabrina, his younger sister, is his only sibling.

DeFranco created his YouTube channel, originally registered as “sxephil,” on September 15, 2006, during his finals at East Carolina University, in which he talks about “newsie style material, and things that matter to today.” Ze Frank, Dane Cook, and the Vlogbrothers are among DeFranco’s influences. He started referring to his news-related videos as The Philip DeFranco Show early on. Prior to March 13, 2017, all of his sxephil videos were either private or removed from the channel.
He called for donations from his fans before the YouTube affiliate service was eligible, pretending to have run out of money and selling all but his Mac, camera, and clothing, as well as overdrawing his bank account so he could spend the night in a hotel because staying in a car in Brooklyn was too dangerous for him.
