Microsoft Corporation is a market leader in the development of personal computer operating systems and software applications. Additionally, the company publishes books and multimedia products, manufactures its own hybrid tablet computers, provides email services, and distributes electronic gaming systems and computer peripherals (input/output devices). It operates sales offices on a global scale. Microsoft operates research laboratories in Cambridge, England (1997); Beijing, China (1998); Bengaluru, India (2005); Cambridge, Massachusetts (2008); New York, New York (2012); and Montreal, Canada (2015).

Bill Gates and Paul G. Allen, two Seattle high school classmates, adapted BASIC, a popular mainframe computer programming language, for use on the Altair, an early personal computer (PC). Soon afterwards, Gates and Allen formed Microsoft, combining the phrases microcomputer and software in the name.

They spent the next few years refining BASIC and developing additional programming languages. In 1980, IBM commissioned Microsoft to develop the critical software, or operating system, for its first personal computer, the IBM PC. Microsoft acquired another company’s operating system, changed it, and renamed it MS-DOS (Microsoft Disk Operating System). MS-DOS was released in 1981 alongside the IBM PC. Following that, the majority of personal computer manufacturers licenced MS-DOS as their operating system, generating enormous revenue for Microsoft; by the early 1990s, the programme had sold more than 100 million copies and defeated rival operating systems such as CP/M, which it displaced in the early 1980s, and later IBM OS/2.

Microsoft cemented its stronghold in operating systems with Windows, a graphical user interface that gained widespread popularity in its third edition, introduced in 1990. By 1993, Windows 3.0 and subsequent versions were selling at a monthly rate of one million copies, and approximately 90% of the world’s personal computers ran on a Microsoft operating system. In 1995, the company developed Windows 95, which merged MS-DOS with Windows for the first time and essentially matched Apple Computer’s Mac OS in terms of simplicity of use. Microsoft also became the market leader in productivity software such as word processors and spreadsheet tools, eclipsing long-standing rivals Lotus and WordPerfect.

As a result, by the mid-1990s, Microsoft, which became a publicly traded company in 1986, had grown to be one of the most dominant and profitable businesses in American history. It constantly made 25 cents on every dollar of sales, an astounding accomplishment. For the first time, the firm exceeded $2 billion in net income in 1996, and its uninterrupted streak of profits continued throughout the Great Recession of 2007–09 (net income had increased to more than $14 billion by fiscal year 2009).

However, the company’s quick expansion in a fiercely competitive and rapidly changing market engendered resentment and jealously among competitors, with some alleging that the company’s activities violated US anti-unfair competition laws. Microsoft and its apologists replied that, far from restricting competition and technological innovation, their growth had facilitated both, and that their software had constantly become more affordable and useful. In 1994, the United States Justice Department settled an inquiry into Microsoft’s sales practises, alleging that they enabled the corporation to unfairly deter OS users from considering other applications. The next year, the Justice Department successfully opposed Microsoft’s proposed acquisition of Intuit Inc., the market leader in financial software for personal computers at the time.

Microsoft was late to recognise the commercial potential of network systems and the Internet, in part due to its phenomenal success in PC software. In 1993, it released Windows NT, a ground-breaking application that connected disparate PCs and increased network dependability and security. Although initial sales were poor, by 1996, Windows NT had swiftly surpassed Novell’s NetWare in market share. Microsoft did not enter the Internet software market until Netscape Communications Corp. developed Navigator, a Web browser tool that simplified the previously complicated process of browsing the World Wide Web.

Microsoft abruptly reversed course and developed its own browser, Internet Explorer, offered it free, and aggressively marketed it to computer manufacturers and Internet service providers. By 1996, Microsoft had packaged Explorer as part of the Windows operating system and had begun the process of integrating Explorer directly into Windows. Netscape responded by accusing Microsoft of breaking the terms of its 1995 consent decree and suing; these actions aided in convincing the Justice Department to reopen a comprehensive probe into Microsoft.
