Michael Jackson Wiki/Bio
Jackson’s musical career began at the age of five, thanks to his father’s encouragement.Katherine Jackson, Jackson’s mother, was a housewife and a devout Jehovah’s Witness. His father, Joseph Jackson, was a guitarist who gave up his musical ambitions to work as a crane operator to support his family. Joseph pushed his sons to succeed behind the scenes. He was also rumoured to be violent towards them.
Jackson was one of ten children; nine of his siblings, including Rebbie, Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, La Toya, Marlon, Randy, and Janet, all made a name for themselves in the music industry. In the early 1960s, Joseph believed his sons possessed talent and formed a musical group known as the Jackson 5.
At first, the Jackson Family performers were Tito, Jermaine, and Jackie Jackson, Jackson’s older brothers. Jackson joined his siblings when he was five years old and quickly rose to prominence as the group’s lead vocalist. He wowed audiences with his ability to convey complex emotions, displaying remarkable range and depth for such a young performer. Marlon, the Jackson’s older brother, also joined the group, which grew into the Jackson 5.
Jackson and his brothers practised and polished their act for countless hours. Initially, the Jackson 5 performed at local venues and amassed a sizable fan base. They only released one single on their own, “Big Boy,” with the B-side “You’ve Changed,” but the record was not well received.
The Jackson 5 went on to open for R&B artists like Gladys Knight and the Pips, James Brown, and Sam and Dave. Many of these artists were signed to the legendary Motown record label, and the Jackson 5 eventually piqued the interest of Motown founder Berry Gordy. Gordy signed the group to his label in early 1969 after being impressed by them.
Jackson and his brothers relocated to Los Angeles, where they lived with Gordy and Diana Ross of the Supremes while settling in. The Jackson 5 made their debut in the music industry in August 1969 at a special event, and they later opened for the Supremes. Diana Ross Presents the Jackson 5 hit the charts in December 1969, with the single “I Want You Back” quickly reaching No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. More chart-topping singles followed quickly, including “ABC,” “The Love You Save,” and “I’ll Be There.”
Under the supervision of Gordy and his Motown staff, Jackson and the Jackson 5 maintained a busy tour and recording schedule for several years. The band became so popular that they had their own self-titled cartoon show, which aired from 1971 to 1972. Jackson launched his solo career at the same time.
Despite the group’s enormous success, trouble was brewing behind the scenes. Tensions between Gordy and Joseph grew over the management of his children’s careers, with the Jacksons demanding more creative control over their material. The group’s relationship with Motown was officially severed in 1976, though Jermaine remained with the label to pursue his solo career. The Jacksons, as they are now known, have signed a new recording contract with Epic Records. By the time their third album for the label, Destiny, was released in 1978, the brothers had established themselves as gifted songwriters.
The Jacksons as a group benefited from the overwhelming positive response to Jackson’s 1979 solo album Off the Wall. Triumph (1980) sold over a million copies, and the brothers went on a lengthy tour to promote the album. At the same time, Jackson continued to look for new ways to strike out on his own.
Jackson embarked on his final tour with his brothers in 1983 to promote the album Victory. The recording’s only major hit was Jackson’s duet with Mick Jagger, “State of Shock.” The Jacksons’ fame and popularity quickly spread. Gladys Knight (1944–) and pianist Billy Taylor discovered them while performing at the Apollo Theater in New York City’s Harlem neighbourhood in 1968. Later that year, during a “Soul Weekend” in Gary, singer Diana Ross (1944–) became associated with the boys. The Jacksons signed a contract with Motown Records with Ross’ help. Berry Gordy (1929–), the well-known Motown executive, took over the Jacksons’ careers.
By 1970, the Jackson Five had topped the charts and were riding a wave of popularity with hits like “ABC,” “The Love You Save,” and “I’ll Be There,” all of which sold over a million copies. The Jackson Five also appeared in several televised specials, and a cartoon series based on their exploits was created. Gordy quickly recognised Michael’s popularity and released solo albums featuring him. These solo albums sold just as well as the Jackson Five’s. The group survived Michael Jackson’s voice change and a bitter breakup with Motown Records in 1976, but as the Jackson family, they continued to fight with each other and with their father.
Michael Jackson starred in The Wiz, an African American adaptation of The Wizard of Oz, in 1978. In a duet with the film’s star, Diana Ross, he sang the only hit from the soundtrack album (“Ease On Down the Road”). His success as the Scarecrow foreshadowed what was to come in his videos, as Jackson appeared to care.
