Martin Short continued to act in plays despite his demanding schedule as a comedian and actor. Martin Short studied social work at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, where he graduated with honors in 1971. Because he had recently lost both of his parents, this was an especially trying period for him. After graduating with a degree in social work, Martin Short aspired to work as a social worker. After graduating from high school in 1971, his first break came when he was cast in the stage production of “Godspell” that same year. He made friends with a few well-known performers and went on to star in the play ‘Fortune and Men’s Eyes’ the following year.

Following his stint as host of “Right On” in 1972, Short went on to join the comedy company known as “Toronto’s Second Comedy.” The first seven years of Martin Short’s career were spent in Canadian television and theatre until he landed a position on the little-known American series ‘The Associates’.

It took Martin Short one more failed TV show, I’m a Big Girl Now before his big break came in the form of his appearance on Second City Television, better known as SCTV. SCTV launched Martin Short’s career, and he quickly established himself as a household presence on television.

Martin Short joined the cast of ‘Saturday Night Live’ in 1984, and many credit his presence with bringing the show back to life following Eddie Murphy’s departure. To follow up on his Saturday Night Live appearances, Short participated in a number of special programs, including “Martin Short: Concert for the North Americas,” “Martin Short Comedy Special,” and “I, Martin Brief Goes Hollywood.” He also had his own chat show called “The Martin Short Show.”

Martin Short made his cinematic debut in 1986 with ‘Three Amigos,’ and his second feature, ‘Innerspace,’ came out a year later. Despite the film’s failure, his performance in ‘Father of the Bride’ stands out among the numerous others he’s appeared in over the years. Short had previously provided the voice of animated characters in films.

Career

One of Hollywood’s most recognizable comics and actors, Martin Short has carved out a successful career for himself in a variety of disciplines. However, his work on ‘Saturday Night Live,’ which aired from 1984 to 1985, deserves to be considered his crowning achievement.
Actor Martin Short married actress Nancy Dorman in 1980 after dating Gilda Radner for a short time. There were three sons born to them. In 2010, Dorman passed away at the age of 91.

In spite of the fact that Martin Short was born and raised in Canada, he was eventually naturalized as a US citizen. Martin Short is thought to be worth $25 million, according to public records. Despite his success as a comedian, Martin, who was born on March 16th, 1950, in Hamilton, Ontario, had a bleak childhood. He had already lost three close family members by the time he was twenty.

When Martin was 12, his older brother David perished in a vehicle accident, leaving him the youngest of his five siblings. When he was 17, his mother Olive, a child violin prodigy who went on to become concertmaster of the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra, died of cancer. The loss devastated him. After that, it was Charles’ turn to follow, which came around two years later. After fleeing Ireland during the Irish War of Independence, he found work in a steel mill in North America.

However, the sad occurrences didn’t bring Martin down or make him depressed; rather, they inspired him to live life to the fullest. He told an interviewer, “I think that kind of loss can feed how you lead your whole life.” “Instead of treating my life like a burden, I’ve decided to approach it like a party.”

It wasn’t until later in life that the gifted comic, who was inspired by comedians like Stan Laurel, Harpo Marx, Jerry Lewis, and Dick Van Dyke, decided to pursue a career in comedy full-time. McMaster University started him as a pre-med student, then changed his major to social work. He was also an actor and appeared in numerous college productions while there.

In a 1972 Toronto production of Godspell, Martin appeared opposite Victor Garber, Gilda Radner, Eugene Levy, and Dave Thomas. The understudy for Gilda Radner, who Martin had previously dated, was comedy actress Nancy Dolman, his future wife. In 1974, they began dating, and they got married in 1980. They have three children: Katherine was born in 1983, Oliver was born in 1989, and Henry was born in 1990. They have three children together.

After leaving Canada in 1979, Martin moved to New York and landed roles in the television series The Associates and the sitcom I’m a Big Girl Now, both of which ran for only two seasons.

In 1977, he joined his Godspell co-stars Eugene Levy and Dave Thomas at the renowned improv ensemble The Second City after being persuaded by them.

In the early 1980s, his comedic abilities were discovered by a broader audience when his troupe launched a television show called SCTV (Second City Television), which aired for several years and was well received. That’s when he began creating many of his now-famous characters, such as talk-show presenter and Wheel of Fortune devotee Ed Grimley, who was based on Canadian interviewer Brian Linehan; albino entertainer Jackie Rogers Jr.; current-events analyst Troy Soren; and Jiminy Glick.

When he brought these characters to Saturday Night Live in the 1984-1985 season, they became even more famous, helping the show rebound after Eddie Murphy left. Martin, a master mimic, gained notoriety on the show for his impressive impersonations of Jerry Lewis and Katharine Hepburn.

After his time on Saturday Night Live, he landed a role in the 1986 picture Three Amigos! and went on to star in films such as Innerspace, Three Fugitives, Father of the Bride, and Mars Attacks! before retiring from acting in 1996. In 2004, he starred in Jiminy Glick In Lalawood as Hollywood agent Jiminy Glick, a man about town.

In the 1990s, Martin remained active in the theatre, appearing in The Goodbye Girl in 1993 and Little Me in 1999, for which he won a Tony Award. Short’s one-man show, Martin Short: Fame Becomes Me, debuted in 2006 and ran until January 2007 before being canceled.

Although the Edmonton native now lives in California, he and his wife have a cottage on a lake north of Toronto in Muskoka where they spend two to three months each year after receiving the Order of Canada in 1994.
