Lin Manuel Miranda Wiki/Bio
Lin Manuel Miranda was born in New York City on January 16, 1980. He was the son of clinical psychologist Dr. Luz Towns-Miranda and Democratic Party counsellor Luis A. Miranda Jr. The name “Lin-Manuel” was influenced by a poem by Puerto Rican writer Jose Manuel Torres Santiago about the Vietnam War, Nana roja para mi hijo Lin Manuel. He grew up in the Inwood neighbourhood. He has Puerto Rican ancestors as well as Mexican ancestors by a grandparent. He spent at least one month a year with his grandparents in Vega Alta, Puerto Rico, during his childhood and adolescence. Luz, Miranda’s older sister, is the Chief Financial Officer of the MirRam Group, a government and communications strategic consultancy company.
Miranda went to Hunter College High School and Hunter College Elementary School. Chris Hayes, a columnist, was one of his classmates. Immortal Technique, a rapper in his class, bullied Miranda at first, but the two eventually became friends. Miranda started composing musicals while still in high school.
His early introduction to a variety of musical styles sparked his interest in hip-hop. He came up with jingles that were later featured in Eliot Spitzer’s 2006 gubernatorial campaign. In the Heights was revised by Miranda and John Buffalo Mailer in collaboration with director Thomas Kail. Quiara Alegra Hudes, a playwright, joined the team in 2004. Following its popularity off-Broadway, the musical was brought to Broadway, where it premiered in March 2008. It received 13 Tony Award nominations and won four, including Best Musical and Best Original Score. It was also nominated for a Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album.
Miranda was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical for his work in the lead role of Usnavi. On February 15, 2009, Miranda stepped down from the Broadway production’s cast. He returned to the role during the national tour of In the Heights, which ran from June 23 to July 25, 2010 in Los Angeles. In San Juan, Puerto Rico, he rejoined the tour once more. Miranda re-joined the Broadway cast as Usnavi from December 25, 2010, to January 9, 2011, when the show closed after 29 previews and 1,185 regular performances.
Miranda played Charley in Merrily We Roll Along in an Encores! staged concert at New York City Center in February 2012. Miranda composed the music and lyrics for the one-act musical 21 Chump Street, and narrated the show’s single appearance at the Brooklyn Academy of Music on June 7, 2014, which was broadcast on NPR’s This American Life on June 20, 2014.
