Leah Cathrine Williamson OBE is a professional footballer from England. She plays for the Women’s Super League side Arsenal and is the England women’s national team captain. Williamson was born on March 29, 1997. She can play in the center defense or the midfield positions due to her versatility. Her whole senior career in the domestic league has been spent with Arsenal. Additionally, she competed for Great Britain in the Olympic Games in the year 2021.

In 2022, Williamson led England to their first triumph at the UEFA European Championship, which was also the first international championship won by the women’s team. Williamson was selected for the Team of the Tournament competition for her efforts. Williamson made her debut for the senior squad as a youngster after Arsenal’s Champions League campaign in 2014; she started for them in the League Cup final that same year, in which she had individual success.

On two occasions, Williamson once won the League with Arsenal, the FA Cup, and the League Cup. She has served as captain of Arsenal many times, and in December 2022, she became the player with the most total appearances (200). Before making her debut with England’s senior squad in 2018, Williamson competed for all of England’s age-group teams throughout the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup qualification round.

During her first few years with England, she saw little playing time. Still, later, under the management of Sarina Wiegman, she was elevated to a more consistent role and eventually became England’s permanent captain. Williamson was motivated to become an Olympic athlete after seeing Greg Rutherford, a long jumper from Milton Keynes, compete at the Summer Olympics in 2012. While watching Rutherford, Williamson momentarily pondered shifting her emphasis to athletics, a sport in which she had previous experience in the local area.

Williamson made her senior team debut the day after her seventeenth birthday when she replaced Rachel Yankey in the 81st minute of Arsenal’s loss to Birmingham City in the UEFA Women’s Champions League quarterfinal match. The match ended in a defeat for Arsenal, 0–2, and it was Williamson’s first game ever. In the quarterfinal, he played her first game in the FA Women’s Super League against Notts County. She came in as a substitute for Jade Bailey in the 76th minute of Arsenal’s match against Everton on June 1, 2014, and went on to win her first major championship, the FA Women’s Cup, with Arsenal. The game was played against Everton.

Williamson scored her first goal for Arsenal in a professional game on July 13, and it came in a League Cup match away against Millwall Lionesses. Arsenal won the match 4–0. She scored her first goal in the league on September 4th against Chelsea. During the 2014 season of the FA Women’s Super League, she played a total of 12 games. Williamson was a member of the Arsenal team that competed against Manchester City in the League Cup final in 2014, which Arsenal ultimately lost 1-0. After the 2014 campaign, she was awarded the title of League Cup Player of the Year, besting the likes of Jess Clarke of Notts County, Ji So-yun of Chelsea, and Toni Duggan of Manchester City to claim the honor.

Williamson was announced as the winner of the England Women’s Youth Player of the Year award on January 8th.On March 31, 2015, only a few days before the FA Women’s Super League 2015 season began, Williamson signed her first professional deal with Arsenal. She was honored with this accolade on April 26 and given the title of 2014–15 PFA Young Women’s Player of the Year. On July 23, during her team’s League Cup match against Watford at home, Williamson grabbed her first goal of the year to help her section to a commanding 3–0 win. After the club’s victory in the quarterfinals of the League Cup against the holders, Manchester City, who had previously defeated Arsenal in the championship game, Williquarterfinals as a pivotal character in the club’s successful League Cup campaign.

Williamson said, “I think Arsenal as a football club have won many trophies in the past, and we wanted to keep winning silverware for the club.” Arsenal has a long history of success in the sport of football. Even though some younger players were on the team, everyone believed we had to come out on top, and morale was high before the game. The championship game from the previous year was never far from our thoughts, and we are aware of how formidable a team City can be. After taking the lead, 1-0, the game became all about always close, which we could successfully do, and the final score was very favorable for us. Williamson did not miss a minute of action throughout the 2017–18 FA Women’s Super League Cup, which Arsenal won by defeating the reigning winners, Manchester City, in the championship match.

Arsenal’s league campaign was more disappointing than previous years, as the club failed to finish in the top two and qualify for the Champions League for the sixth straight season in the WSL. She began the season playing in the middle of the field, but in December 2017, when a new manager named Joe Montemurro took over, she moved to the central defense position. Williamson said the following on her shift in responsibilities: “I’m not sure in the long term, and I never want to shut the door on either position because I know I can do both.” But I’ve found that our style allows me to enjoy my role as a center-back. Under Joe’s leadership,

We want to play out from the back, and that play plays to my strengths. I’m having fun playing center half for now, but I won’t close the door on other positions in the team just yet. At the close of the season, Williamson remarked on now that Montemurro took over as head coach and said, “I feel like since Joe came in, we’re back on a journey again; we had lost that a little bit.” Despite today’s events, I think we are constructing something. However, almost every game we have played since early November has been a must toll this has had on us has been significant. We have gone into every game in the league and the cups.

On the 14th of October in 2018, Arsenal set a marker in their championship pursuit with a 5–0 hammering of champions Chelsea. This was the first home loss inflicted on the winners since July 2016 and the first time they had been defeated at home since becoming champions. After a 4–0 victory over Bristol City on 28 October, Williamson assisted Jordan Nobbs for one of the goals; Joe Montemurro reacted highly to her performance and started using Williamson on the right side of a back three formation. Williamson was credited with the assist on one of the goals.

Arsenal started the season by winning their first nine games and entered their encounter with Manchester City six points ahead of their closest competition for the championship. Despite having an injury crisis, Arsenal lost the match 2–0. Two games later, on the occasion of Williamson’s 100th appearance for Arsenal, the team suffered a 2-1 loss to Chelsea, which enabled Manchester City to go one point ahead of Arsenal even playing. Arsenal tried to retain their championship in the FA WSL Continental Cup on February 23, but Manchester City defeated them 4–2 on penalties; despite this, Montemurro lauded Williamson after the match.

In the league, Arsenal won four games in a row, and following a 5–1 victory away at Liverpool on March 24, England manager Phil Neville expressed his belief that Williamson will one day lead the national side. Neville’s comments came after Arsenal won the league.[33] After taking another four straight games, including a 4–0 victory against Brighton at the Falmer Stadium on April 28, the club was able to seal the championship and take home the hardware. Williamson and Lisa Evans, who were both playing right wing-back, were the recipients of most of the passes thrown throughout the season.

Williamson had 1,501 total touches, which was more than any other Arsenal player, and he also completed 591 passes when the ball was in the opponent’s possession. In addition, she was responsible for thirty interceptions, which was the most of any other player on the team. On June 16, 2021, Arsenal announced that Williamson had extended his stay with the club by signing a new one-year deal that would take him until the conclusion of the 2021–22 season.

Only seven months later, in January 2022, she agreed with the club to extend her contract for another year. The length of Leah Williamson’s new commitment has not been made public by Arsenal, but head coach Jonas Eidevall referred to her as “a player for us to build Arsenal around” in a statement. Since 2010, Williamson has competed for England at various levels of youth competition.

She was first invited up to practice with the under-15 squad for a thirty-player camp in April 2010, and she was retained for the new season in August of the same year. Her position on the pitch is that of a midfielder. They lost on penalties in the third-place play-off against Italy, with Williamson scoring one of England’s three to Italy’s four and being included in the team of the tournament. She captained the England under-17 side during the 2014 UEFA Women’s Under-17 Championship, which was held in November and December 2013. England ultimately finished in fourth place.

In addition, she was a member of the under-20 squad that competed in the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, held in Canada in August 2014. Williamson was a member of England’s starting lineup for each match, even throbbing in the group stage, without winning a single game. Williamson converted a penalty kick for her side on April 9, 2015, as they were competing against Norway in a qualification match for the 2015 UEFA under-19 championship.

Which had been given the go-ahead to be re-conducted five days after the first competition. UEFA made a judgment that had never been made before, and it said that the game should be resumed from the 96th minute. Before this, on April 4th, Williamson’s successful penalty kick for England was overturned because of player encroachment (by substitute Rosella Ayane, who had earned the penalty and scored a goal in her short cameo off the bench).

In this scenario, the rules dictate that the penalty kick should be retaken; nevertheless, the German referee, Marija Kurtes, gave Norway a free kick rather than retaking the penalty attempt. Following objections from the England team, the governing body of Europe decided that the match should be restarted from the point at which the incident occurred. After everyone had competed in what was supposed to be their last qualifying match for the competition, the players came back to complete the final two minutes of their game.
