Heather Laurie Holden was born in Los Angeles County, Los Angeles, California, on December 17, 1969, to Glen Corbett and Adrianne Ellis. Her parents were both actors. However, things between them were not perfect, and they divorced shortly after Laurie was born.
Laurie split her time between Toronto and Los Angeles after Adrianne married film director Michael Anderson. She had always wanted to be an actress since she was a child. Laurie’s acting career was also made easier by the fact that her stepfather is a film director. She competed in many beauty pageants while living and studying in Toronto, winning a number of them.
Laurie was not professionally educated in acting, although participating in a few projects as a young actor. She eventually transferred to the ‘University of California, Los Angeles,’ where she got a bachelor’s degree in theatre and cinema. During her college years, she was also involved in theatre. She enrolled in ‘Columbia University’ to pursue a master’s degree in human rights, as she was also interested in humanitarian work. Laurie got her start in acting as a youngster by visiting the sets of her father’s miniseries “The Martian Chronicles.” The actor who was meant to play Marie Wilder was unable to make the shoot. She made her cinematic début in 1986, starring in her stepfather’s erotic comedy “Separate Vacations.” The movie was a critical and financial failure.
Laurie then landed a major role in the crime thriller “Physical Evidence,” with veteran Hollywood actor Burt Reynolds. Despite creating a “buzz,” the picture did not perform well at the box office and was widely lambasted by critics.
Career
Laurie made a guest appearance on the series “Captain Power and the Soldiers of the Future” in 1988. Because she was still studying at the time, she only got a few acting roles. She had no intention of embarking on a full-fledged acting career till she graduated.She appeared in episodes of ‘Young Catherine,’ ‘Father Dowling Mysteries,’ and ‘Scales of Justice’ in the early 1990s.
Laurie made her television debut in the first season of a show called “Family Passions” in 1993, the year she graduated from college. After that, she starred in the second season of the TV show “Destiny Ridge.” Both efforts, however, were a failure.
She went on to star in single-episode parts in shows including TekWar and Due South. Her film career had come to a halt at that moment, and she was hoping for a break.
In 1996, she landed a recurring part in the science-fiction series “The X Files” as “Marita Covarrubias,” a mystery government officer. She was a regular on the show from the fourth to the ninth season, which lasted till 2004.
She went on to star in TV movies like “Echo” and “Alibi.” In 1998, she scored yet another break when she was cast as a supporting character in the western television series “The Magnificent Seven.” She appeared in 18 episodes of the series as Mary Travis.
