Kolo Abib Touré is an Ivorian professional football manager and a former player. He was born on March 19, 1981, in Ivory Coast. Wigan Athletic, a team in the Championship, was most recently under his management. Touré started his professional career as a defender with ASEC Mimosas. In 2002, he went to the English Club Arsenal, where he played for 326 games and was a part of the ‘invincibles’ squad in 2003–2004.

In 2009, he made a move to Manchester City, where he was joined by his younger brother Yaya Touré a year later. Together, they contributed to Manchester City’s first league championship in 44 years, which came in 2013. In 2013, Touré made his professional debut with Liverpool. He is one of eight players who have won the Premier League with two different teams, having done it with both Arsenal and City. He won the league in each of those capacities.

Additionally, he was a part of the Celtic team that won the Scottish Premiership and the Scottish League Cup. He has played in the Premier League 353 times, making him the African player with the most appearances. Touré made 120 appearances for the Ivory Coast national team between 2000 and 2015. This makes him the country’s second-most-capped player. He competed for the squad in the FIFA World Cup competitions in 2006, 2010, and 2014.

In addition, Touré played for the Ivory Coast in seven tournaments for the Africa Cup of Nations between 2002 and 2015, helping the team finish in second place in 2006 and 2012 and first place in 2015. Even though Arsenal could not defend their title in that year’s Premier League, Touré took a significant stride forward in his career by helping his team win the FA Cup even though he did not start the game.

Wenger started playing Touré in the middle of the defense with Sol Campbell at the beginning of the 2003–2004 season. In addition to having a successful season overall, during which Arsenal went unbeaten in the league and ultimately won the Championship, he forged a solid relationship with Campbell. Although he only scored one goal and had one assist, he built a name for himself as an offensive defender despite having previously played as a striker or an attacking midfielder. He had one assist and only scored one goal.

In the 2004–05 season, Touré was a member of the Arsenal squad on and off due to competition for a starting position from players such as Philippe Senderos and Pascal Cygan. Campbell was the starting center-back for the Gunners at that time. Touré finished the season with a medal for winning the FA Cup after appearing in 50 games for Arsenal and scoring one goal.

Touré has cemented his place in Arsenal’s starting eleven, making it impossible for the team to imagine playing without him. During the 2005–2006 season, he formed a powerful defensive pair with Senderos. Senderos was his partner. After preserving ten straight clean sheets, a record for a European tournament, both center-backs contributed to the Arsenal team’s success in reaching the final of the 2006 UEFA Champions League.

On April 19, 2006, Touré scored the game-winning goal in the first leg of the Champions League semi-final match against Villarreal CF. It was his second goal in European competition. It was the penultimate European goal scored at Highbury, and it was also the goal that ultimately settled the tie (Arsenal won 1-0 on aggregate). As a result, Arsenal advanced to their very first Champions League penultimate, which would take place in Paris, France.

Touré was given the number 5 jersey for the 2006–07 season, which had been open since Martin Keown vacated it at the beginning of the previous year. In August of 2006, Touré renewed his contract with Arsenal for another four years. During the 2006–07 season, Touré served as the junior vice-captain, following in the footsteps of Gilberto Silva, who had served as the previous vice-captain, and Thierry Henry, who had served as the last captain.

On January 9, 2007, he led Arsenal to a 6–3 win against Liverpool in the League Cup. This was his first time wearing the captain’s armband for the club. He also captained the Gunners in the first leg of the semi-final against Tottenham Hotspur, and he led the team out for the final game of this tournament, which they won. After Jérémie Aliadière, Thierry Henry, and Freddie Ljungberg left the club during the summer transfer window in 2007, he became the Arsenal player with the longest tenure at the club. He is now the longest-serving member of the current Arsenal team.

Additionally, he led Arsenal in a few games at the beginning of the 2007–08 season when the team’s regular captain, William Gallas, suffered an injury in a match against Blackburn Rovers. During a game against Bolton Wanderers, he scored a goal from a free kick by shooting it at a low angle. The ball passed under two Bolton defenders and beat Jussi Jaaskelainen.

However, he was hurt during the Africa Cup of Nations and didn’t appear quite himself when he returned. He subsequently injured himself again during the Champions League match against AC Milan when he stopped Alexandre Pato’s shot with his leg and had to be taken off the field after receiving treatment. On March 15, Touré returned to the starting lineup for Arsenal and scored the goal that tied the game against Middlesbrough. The goal came in the closing ten minutes of the match.

After allegedly getting into an altercation with his defensive partner Gallas on April 13, 2009, Touré clarified that he wanted out of his contract with Arsenal. It has been stated that he submitted a transfer request, but Peter Hill-Wood, the chairman of Arsenal, ultimately denied it. Nevertheless, Touré had a last-minute change of heart and promised to remain loyal to the Gunners at least until the end of the season.

On July 28, 2009, it was confirmed that Manchester City had agreed with Touré’s agent for a transfer price of 14 million pounds. This news came after a great deal of transfer rumors. Touré signed a contract with the club on July 29, 2009, in Manchester after completing a medical examination there. The sale was for four years, although the club could extend it to five years. City, who had placed 10th the previous season, had made several high-profile acquisitions in preparation for the 2009–10 season. Touré planned to help make City a top-four club by contributing to City’s success in this area.

Mark Hughes gave him the honor of leading the team as captain. On September 23, 2009, he scored his first goal for Manchester City in a victory against Fulham in the League Cup by 2–1. On November 7, 2009, he scored his first goal in the league for City, a match against Burnley. Five points separated Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur at the end of the season, which resulted in Manchester City finishing in fifth place. On July 2, 2010, a move brought Yaya Touré, Kolo Touré’s brother, to Manchester City in an estimated deal of about £24 million.

At the beginning of the 2010–2011 season, Roberto Mancini pulled the captain’s armband away from Touré and handed it to Carlos Tevez. Tevez was the new captain of the team. Despite this, he continued to be a part of Mancini’s plans and was a consistent member of the first-team defense. On the 20th of December 2010, Manchester City lost 2–1 to Everton, and he was given a red card during the game, which contributed to City missing out on the opportunity to lead the Premier League standings on Christmas.

On January 15, 2011, Touré scored the first goal for the Citizens in a victory against the Wolves, resulting in a 4–3 win and sending the Citizens to the top of the league standings. It was disclosed on March 3, 2011, that Touré received a damaging result on a drug test and had been suspended. Beginning on March 2, 2011, the World Anti-Doping Agency handed down a six-month football penalty.

Touré was a Manchester City squad member during the 2011–12 season, during which the club won the Premier League for the first time in 44 years, and Touré made 14 appearances in the league. On May 28, 2013, Liverpool announced that they had struck a deal in principle to sign Touré from Manchester City as a free agent. Touré’s previous club was Liverpool. On July 2, he was presented to the public as Liverpool’s first new transfer window signing, and he was given the number 4 jersey at that time.

He committed to the job for two years. On the 13th of July 2013, he made his debut for Liverpool in a pre-season friendly match against Preston North End, which the team won 4–0. His first game in the Premier League was on August 17, 2013, and it was a win for Liverpool against Stoke City at Anfield by a score of 1-0. In a match on February 2, 2014, against West Bromwich Albion, he committed a mistake that lost the game by giving the ball directly to Victor Anichebe, who then scored an equalizer for his team.

On February 12, 2014, he scored an own goal in a game that Liverpool was playing against Fulham. The game was ultimately won by Liverpool courtesy of a late penalty kick from their captain, Steven Gerrard. It was the first time he and his brother Yaya, who began the match for City, met each other in a competitive encounter when he came in as a substitute against Manchester City on March 1, 2015. It was also the first time that he played against Manchester City.

On February 14, 2016, Touré scored his debut goal for Liverpool by heading in Jordan Henderson’s corner kick to seal a 6–0 victory away against Aston Villa, the team’s lowest-ranked opponent. He hadn’t scored in any game since January 2011, so when he finally did, he went crazy excitedly. In April of 2000, Touré played his first game for Ivory Coast, a match against Rwanda. At the African Cup of Nations in Egypt in January 2006, he participated in all five of his country’s games, helping Ivory Coast finish in second place, behind the hosts.

He was selected to be a part of the 23-man team led to the 2006 FIFA World Cup by head coach Henri Michel. He made his debut appearance in a FIFA World Cup match on June 11, 2006, when the Ivory Coast was defeated by Argentina by a score of 2–1. To this point, he has scored three goals for the Ivory Coast national team. Two of those goals were obtained by headers against Guinea and Gabon, while the other was achieved against Japan via a shot taken from 20 yards out and beyond the penalty area.

On November 29, 2022, Wigan Athletic announced that they had hired Touré to coach their first team on a contract that would last for three and a half years. The squad captained by Touré suffered their third straight defeat on January 2, 2023, this time by a score of 4–1, and as a direct consequence, they fell to the bottom of the Championship standings. Wigan Athletic dismissed Toure as manager on January 26, 2023, after the team was winless in any of his nine games in charge and was positioned last in the Championship standings.
