Kevin Hugh Lowe is a former player, coach, and executive in Canada’s professional ice hockey league. He was born on April 15, 1959. After holding the positions of head coach and then general manager of the Edmonton Oilers, Lowe later became the vice chairman of Oilers Entertainment Group and remained in that capacity until his retirement on August 2, 2022. Lowe is second only to Glen Sather regarding the number of Stanley Cups won by the Oilers while he was in that role.

Between 1979 and 2000, he was a member of the defense units of the Edmonton Oilers and the New York Rangers. In his career, Lowe was victorious in six Stanley Cup competitions. He was presented with the King Clancy Memorial Trophy in the year 1990. In 2020, he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame, and in 2021, he was given the Order of Hockey in Canada.

In 1976, Lowe joined the Quebec Remparts, a team that competed in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. Anglophone by birth, he was required to learn French to play for the squad. In 1978, he was given the role of captain, making him the first English captain in the team’s history. Lowe had 42 goals and 131 assists for 173 points while playing with the Remparts in 201 games. He also racked up 245 penalty minutes.

At one time, he was in discussions with the Birmingham Bulls of the World Hockey Association (WHA), but he was unwilling to join them, and the subject was moot after it was revealed that the Bulls would not join the NHL. In the 1979 NHL Entry Draft, the Edmonton Oilers took him in the first round, position 21 overall, making him the team’s first draft pick in the history of the National Hockey League.

During the earlier part of his career, Lowe was a member of the Oilers for 13 complete seasons and contributed to the team’s win of five Stanley Cups. Lowe was considered the third among equals among the leaders of the Oilers’ 1980s dynasty, along with Wayne Gretzky (the club captain) and Mark Messier (the alternate captain). This was because Lowe served as one of the alternate captains during his initial career with the Oilers.

Lowe didn’t miss a single playoff game despite playing with a fractured wrist and a complete cast during the Oilers’ run to the Stanley Cup in 1988. This might be a possible reason for his point totals (0-2-2 in 19 games), but he didn’t miss a single postseason game. While the Oilers were celebrating their Stanley Cup victory, Wayne Gretzky revealed to the public that Rob Lowe had concealed damaged ribs throughout the playoffs.

Following Mark Messier’s transfer to the New York Rangers, Lowe was promoted to club captain for the 1991–1992 season. Even though the Oilers got off to a terrible start in early October, going 1-5-1, the club overcame the leadership change and ended with a record of 36-34-10.In December of 1992, the Oilers made the deal to send him to the New York Rangers (at the time, Lowe was a restricted free agent).

In 1994, he won the Stanley Cup with five other former Oilers (Glenn Anderson, Jeff Beukeboom, Adam Graves, Craig MacTavish, and Mark Messier), increasing his total number of Stanley Cup victories to six. Esa Tikkanen was also a part of that championship team.
He signed with the Oilers again the following year as a free agent and completed an entire season of play for them in 1996. He also began the 1997–1998 season with the Oilers, but due to an inner-ear illness that compromised his balance, he could only play in seven games before being forced to retire.

Lowe participated in 1254 games during the regular season in his professional career, finishing with 84–347–431 points and 1498 minutes in penalties. He went on to play a further 214 postseason games, finishing with 10–48–58 scoring totals and 192 penalty minutes. In the history of the Oilers franchise, nobody other has worn the team’s jersey for a more significant number of regular season and postseason games than Lowe did (1037 and 172).

He was the first player ever selected by the franchise in the NHL draft and scored the team’s first goal in the NHL. It was a power-play goal against the Chicago Blackhawks, and Wayne Gretzky and Brett Callighen assisted on it (this was Gretzky’s first NHL point). Many people, including Wayne Gretzky, believe the Great One directed the puck into the goal. During his career as a professional ice hockey player, Lowe never participated in a single game in the lower leagues, and just one of his teams was eliminated from postseason contention.

In 1984, 1985, 1986, 1988, 1989, 1990, and 1993, the National Hockey League selected Lowe to participate in the All-Star Game. In addition, he was awarded the King Clancy Memorial Trophy by the league in 1990. In 1998, Lowe became an assistant coach with the Oilers and was a staff member. In 1999, he succeeded Ron Low as head coach after taking over those responsibilities. He was the head coach of the Oilers for just one season, during which they won 32 of 82 games (a record of 32-26-16-8) and advanced to the first round of the playoffs, where the Dallas Stars eliminated them with a history of 1-4. He won 32 of the 82 games.

In 2000, when longtime General Manager Glen Sather resigned to become General Manager of the New York Rangers, the Oilers elevated him to General Manager. Before being promoted to President of Hockey Operations for the Oilers after the 2008–2009 season, he continued to serve as the team’s Executive Vice President and General Manager. In addition to that, Lowe is accountable for assisting Canadian national hockey teams.

He was a part of the management staff for the Canadian men’s ice hockey team that competed in the 2002 Winter Olympics and won the gold medal. In addition, he was selected as a manager for the Canadian squad that competed in the 2004 World Cup of Hockey. Additionally, he has served as the head coach for Team Canada at the World Hockey Championships.
The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League established the Kevin Lowe Trophy (Trophée Kevin Lowe) in 2005. This trophy is given out every year to the player in the QMJHL, who is regarded as the league’s top defensive defenseman.

During the winter between the 2006–2007 NHL seasons, Lowe made contract offers to restricted free agents Thomas Vanek and Dustin Penner, who accepted recommendations from their respective teams. The Sabres of the NHL matched Vanek’s request, while Penner signed with the Ducks of the NHL. After the offer sheet was extended to Penner, Brian Burke, serving as the general manager of the Anaheim Ducks at the time, publicly criticized Kevin Lowe for an increase in player compensation and accused Lowe of “colossal stupidity.”

Then, as a response, head coach Craig MacTavish compared Burke to the Wizard of Oz, saying, “You comb his hair, put a white shirt on, wheel him out in front of the camera, and he’ll say whatever you guys want.” This comment did not amuse Burke. After being attacked by Burke, Lowe did not reply to the allegations until July 4, 2008, when he appeared on a local radio program hosted by Bob Stauffer and referred to Burke as a “moron” and “a media junkie.”

The Oilers did not officially retire Lowe’s number four until 2021; before then, he was the first player in the Oilers franchise to wear the number four until he gave it to Taylor Hall, the first player selected overall by the Oilers in 2010. Up to the beginning of the 2021-2022 season, Kris Russell played for the Oilers while donning the No. 4 jersey. Following in the footsteps of his older siblings Carol, Nancy, and Kenneth, Lowe was the fourth child to be born to Clifford and Jessie Lowe. The Lowe family managed a dairy farm in Lachute, Quebec, where most residents speak French. They were among the few English Catholic families in the area, otherwise populated mainly by francophones.

Since Clifford was engaged in a local hockey rink operation, he took his children there to skate when they were little. Lowe began skating there when he was only three years old. In subsequent years, his brother Kenneth was the Head Medical Trainer in the Oilers organization. He is the father of Bakersfield Condors defenseman Keegan Lowe, who was selected by the Carolina Hurricanes in the third round, 73rd overall, at the 2011 NHL Entry Draft. He is married to Canadian Olympian Karen Percy and the husband of Canadian Olympian Karen Percy.

Shane Fennessey, a Canadian filmmaker, is Lowe’s eldest son and only child. Melissa Lowe, a Canadian bobsledder, counts Kevin as her uncle. Kevin is also Melissa’s uncle. It was announced that Lowe would be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame as a member of the class of 2020. During most of his playing career, Lowe was a defensive defenseman, the first defensive defenseman to be inducted into the Hall of Fame since Rod Langway in 2002. The induction of Lowe into the Hall of Fame marked the conclusion of the “Group of Seven” era for the Oilers.

After the National Hockey League season, the legend of the Edmonton Oilers sat down with his wife and jotted down a list of all the activities and destinations they wanted to experience together. After considering the outcomes, Lowe concluded that he should leave his position in the front office of the Oilers. It was announced on Tuesday that he would be stepping down from his positions as vice chair and alternative governor. In 1979, the club made Lowe the first player it had selected in an NHL draft. In his time with Edmonton, he was a part of five Stanley Cup victories, and in 1994, he was an integral part of the New York Rangers’ championship run.

In 2005, Lowe was a competition committee member responsible for implementing several new rules designed to increase the number of scoring opportunities. The new regulations changed the positions of the lines that were painted on the ice, lowered the size of the goalie’s equipment, and included a shootout in the scenario in which a game is still tied after five minutes of extra. “Very few have had the impact that Kevin has had, both on and off the ice,” Oiler’s chairman Bob Nicholson said in a statement on Tuesday on Kevin’s career with the team.

He is a model of leadership and has contributed much to fostering a connection between our company and the members of our fanbase, all while providing support for many worthy projects in our community. The Oilers have been operating without a genuine President of Hockey Operations or General Manager since they relieved Peter Chiarelli of his responsibilities at the end of January. Keith Gretzky volunteered to fill in as general manager in the interim and has done an outstanding job.

In the rumor mill, numerous names have been thrown about, ranging from Mike Gillis to Bill Zeto, as potential candidates for the next POHO position for the Oilers. Instead, Kevin Lowe, a former player for the Edmonton Oilers, was hired by Bob Nicholson. Before this morning, Kevin Lowe was serving as the Vice-Chairman of the Oilers Entertainment Group. He stepped down from that position this morning. Before that, Lowe served the Edmonton Oilers as the team’s General Manager and Head Coach.
