Feargal Sharkey is an Irish musician who became internationally famous for his role as the main vocalist of the pop-punk band The Undertones throughout the 1970s and early 1980s. He was born and reared in Londonderry, the second-biggest city in Northern Ireland. Just four months before he left school, he came into touch with the band members, later known as “The Undertones,” and began practicing with them.

Although little is known about his musical experience, he quickly joined the band as its main singer. Before the release of their first long-playing album, entitled “Teenage Kicks,” the band played shows at schools, scout halls, youth groups, and bars. After some time, they achieved a fair amount of notoriety and released four albums before disbanding as a band. Sharkey then embarked on a solo career and became well-known for his track “A Good Heart,” a huge hit worldwide.

Later, he stopped singing and began working on the business side of the music industry instead. In 2019, he will be given the honorary title of Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for his contributions to the music industry. Feargal Sharkey was born on August 13, 1958, in the city of Londonderry, in the Northern Irish province of Northern Ireland. Jim Sharkey, who would become his father, had a career as an electrician and was very involved in the Electrical Trade Union. Sibeal Sharkey was the name of the man’s mother.

Born the second youngest of his parents, seven children, he had three brothers named Jimmy, Michael, and Diarmuid and three sisters named Patricia, Ursula, and Bridge. He was the second youngest of the three brothers and the second youngest of the three sisters. On the other hand, he previously said he was one of 10 children. Therefore it is reasonable to assume that three of his siblings did not survive childhood. He received his education from the Christian Brothers at St. Peter’s Secondary School.

There, he became a member of the Boy Scouts of America organization, and by 1976, he was a Scoutmaster. In February of that year, he went to a scout hall where he met the band members that would later be known as “The Undertones,” he began practicing with them. In June of 1976, he dropped out of school and started working for Radio Rental as an “installation engineer” or a “linesman assistant junior.” In this role, he was responsible for delivering and fixing television sets and was paid £7.01 a week for his efforts.

He was required to give his mother £5 from the whole amount. In 1976, Feargal Sharkey kicked out his career as a musician by becoming the lead vocalist of a band that would later be known as “The Undertones.” The band played their first shows at various schools and scout halls. On March 16, he played his first performance, which took place at Saint Joseph’s Secondary School, and he misspelled the band’s name there. They were questioned about the band’s moniker just before the performance at Saint Joseph’s started.

Sharkey, who was ignorant that there was already another band named “Eddie and the Hot Rods,” referred to their band as “The Hot Rod.”At one of their performances in late 1976, which took place at the Waterside Youth Club, Sharkey made yet another blunder by referring to the band as “Little Feat,” which was already the name of a famous band from the United States. They ultimately decided to use ‘The Undertones’ as their official band name to prevent further humiliation.

After the arrival of punk music in the UK in the latter half of 1976, the band shifted its attention to performing punk rock in schools and youth groups, sometimes receiving payment for their performances. Finally, in February of 1977, they were offered their first work that was utterly compensated when they were recruited by a tavern known as the “Cashback” at a rate of £30 per sitting.
Cashback continued to have undertones for the subsequent eighteen months. In March of 1978, they produced a demo tape and sent copies to several record labels, only to get rejection letters.

However, the copy they gave John Peel, a famous DJ who works for BBC Radio 1, resulted in some positive feedback. They recorded their first album, “Teenage Kicks,” with the assistance of John Peel on June 15, 1978, in Belfast. In addition, he started playing the songs on his show, and it wasn’t long before the song titled “Teenage Kicks” became an enormous hit. Sharkey and Bradley entered a deal with Sire Records on October 2, 1978, committing The Undertones to the label for five years. After that, on October 26, 1978, they had a live performance of “Teenage Kicks” on Top of the Pops, and in November of the same year, they began their very first tour of the United Kingdom.

The band’s self-titled first album, released in 1979, was a commercial and critical triumph. However, their second album, “Hypnotised,” published in April 1980, reached number six on the UK charts, and their third album, “Positive Touch,” released in 1981, earned a top position of number 17 in those rankings. In 1983, they recorded their last album, “The Sin of Pride.”At the beginning of 1983, tensions between the members of The Undertones became more apparent. However, to meet the promises made, they continued to work together until July, playing several shows all across Europe before giving their last performance in County Kildare, Ireland, on the 17th. They ceased to exist not long after this occurrence. Feargal Sharkey launched his solo career in 1984, releasing his first song, “Listen to Your Father,” in September of that year. It peaked at No. 23 in the UK, while in Ireland, it achieved No. 22.

In 1985, he released his first solo album, Feargal Sharkey. The album consisted of 10 songs and two of his singles that became hits: “A Good Heart” and “You Little Thief.” In addition to being recognized as having achieved Gold status in the UK, the album reached position No. 12 on the UK Album chart and No. 7 on the Australia (Kent Music Report) list. In 1988, he released his second studio album, “Wish.” However, compared to his first solo album, it turned out to be pretty underwhelming, and it was not included on the CD released in the UK.

However, it reached its highest position on the album chart in Sweden at number 22, while in Australia, it reached number 66 (Kent Music Report). Songs from the Mardi Gras’ was his third and last album, and it was published in the year 1991. It reached its highest position on the UK Albums Chart at No. 27, as well as on the Swedish Album Chart at No. 41. Nevertheless, the song “I’ve Got News for You” managed to climb as high as position No. 12 on the UK Chart and position No. 8 on the Ireland Chart. Feargal Sharkey is said to have left the entertainment industry around 1992 and transitioned into the business side of the music industry, beginning his career as an A&R for Polydor Records. In later years, he rose through the ranks to become the managing director of EXP Ltd.

He was given a place on the Radio Authority in December 1998, and he continued to serve in that capacity until December 2003. In 2004, he was given the position of chairman of the “Live Music Forum,” one of his responsibilities was to assess how the Licensing Act of 2003 would affect live music performance. His promotion to Chairman of British Music Rights came in January 2008. After becoming CEO of UK Music in October, he left his job on November 11, 2011, to pursue retirement.

The solo track “A Good Heart” that Sharkey released in 1985 is primarily responsible for his widespread fame. It was written by Maria McKee and reached number one on the UK Single Chart, where it stayed for two weeks after getting that position. In 2019, the Queen’s Birthday Honours List recognized Sharkey’s contributions to the music industry by bestowing him the title of Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE). He has also been honored with several additional accolades for his significant contributions to the world of music, including the Scott Piering Award in 2004 and the Bottle Award in 2006.

The Honorary Doctor of Arts degree was bestowed to him by the University of Hertfordshire in the year 2008. There is little information about his private life other than that his wife’s name is Elizabeth Sharkey and that the couple has at least one kid, presumably born in 1982. In 1999, Sharkey declined to rejoin the band when The Undertones got back together. Feargal Sharkey is best known for his work as the lead vocalist for the band The Undertones; nevertheless, he has devoted much time on the front lines to conserve Britain’s rivers in recent years.

The singer-turned-activist is wearing waders and speaking on the banks of a stretch of the River Lea in Hertfordshire, home to the Amwell Magna Fishery, Britain’s oldest fly fishing club. His father was a trade unionist in Derry, and he was one of 10 children raised in one of Northern Ireland’s roughest cities. He was raised in one of the city’s toughest neighborhoods. Sharkey, whose passion for fly fishing began when he was only a little lad, now serves as the head of this venerable organization.

Whose membership is limited to sixty at any one time and provides access to what is possibly the wild brown trout population located the closest to London. Feargal Sharkey, a former pop singer turned environmental activist, criticized the government’s new clean water policy on Tuesday, calling it “muddled” and accusing it of recycling a proposed ban on plastic in wet wipes. After another 55 years, which is the oldest fly fishing club in the United Kingdom.

Downstream from Hertford, it has been home to the only remaining breeding population of wild brown trout in the River Lea for nearly two centuries. They believe that fish that swam down the Rhine 8,000 years ago are their ancestors. Next month, Feargal Sharkey, a former frontman for a punk band who is now an environmentalist, will be one of the speakers at an event open to the public in Ramsgate.

The meeting has been organized by the Thanet Green Party to examine the effects of the ongoing pollution occurring along our coastline as a result of sewage being released into the sea by Southern Water. Feargal Sharkey, once the main singer for the band The Undertones, has emerged as a popular and successful advocate for the cause of reducing pollution in our rivers and along our beaches. Ahead of his talk, Mr. Sharkey, who had flown in from London and stayed at the Boat Hotel in Boat of Garten on May 17, granted an exclusive interview to Highland News & Media, the publisher of the Northern Times.
