Drake, who was born Aubrey Drake Graham on October 24, 1986, in Toronto, Canada, was raised with music in his blood. Dennis Graham, his father, was a drummer for legendary rock ‘n’ roll star Jerry Lee Lewis. Larry Graham, an uncle, played bass for Sly and the Family Stone. Drake’s mother, Sandi Graham, says she comes from a “very musical” family; his grandmother babysat Aretha Franklin. Drake comes from a diverse and one-of-a-kind ethnic and religious background. His father is a Catholic African-American, and his mother is a white Canadian Jew. Drake describes his personal identity as follows: “Finally, I consider myself a Black man because I am more immersed in Black culture than anyone else. Being Jewish adds a unique twist. It distinguishes me.”
Drake’s parents divorced when he was five years old, and he was raised by his mother in Forest Hill, Toronto’s affluent and mostly Jewish neighbourhood. He went to Jewish day school, had a Bar Mitzvah at the age of 13, and observed Jewish High Holy Days with his mother. “My mother has always made Hanukkah enjoyable,” Drake recalls. “She used to make latkes and give cool gifts when I was younger.” Despite his Jewish upbringing, Drake says he felt isolated at Forest Hill Collegiate Institute, his almost entirely white high school.
Drake got his start in the entertainment industry thanks to one of his Forest Hill classmates. “”There was a kid in my class whose father was an agent,” Drake later explained, adding, “his father would say, ‘If there’s anyone in the class who makes you laugh, have them audition for me.'” He became my agent after the audition.”
Drake played Jimmy Brooks, a basketball star who becomes permanently wheelchair-bound after being shot by a classmate, in the show, which followed the dramatic lives of a group of teenagers at Degrassi High School.
Career
Drake dropped out of school to pursue his acting career, graduating in 2012 from high school. He appeared on Degrassi for seven years (2001-2009), winning a Young Artist Award for best ensemble in a TV series in 2002, among other accolades. The show quickly gained a devoted cult following — “there are very few subtle Degrassi fans,” Drake has said — catapulting him to celebrity status in Canada while remaining relatively unknown in the United States.
Drake began attempting to break into the hip hop world while still appearing on Degrassi. In 2006, he released his first mixtape, Room for Improvement, which sold approximately 6,000 copies. He followed that up in 2007 with the release of another mixtape, Comeback Season, on his own October’s Very Own label (later to be shortened to OVO). 3 More importantly, the song included a version of Brisco and Flo Rida’s “Man of the Year” featuring Lil Wayne. Drake decided to keep Wayne’s verses and hook while writing the rest of the lyrics himself. This piqued the interest of Jas Prince, son of Rap-A-Lot Records founder James Prince, who decided to introduce Drake to Lil Wayne.
Degrassi’s producers restructured the cast in 2008, removing Drake’s character. Drake was on the verge of looking for a day job because he didn’t have a steady source of income and wasn’t yet making a lot of money as a rapper. “I was dealing with the fact that… I might have to work in a restaurant or something just to keep things going,” he recalls. However, in early 2008, he received an unexpected call from Lil Wayne, who asked him to fly to Houston that night to join his Carter III tour.
