Dr. Sebi was born in the Honduran town of Ilanga in 1933. His grandmother taught him about herbal medicine and similar folk rituals, and his grandfather was originally from Haiti. Bowman, who was of African ancestry, referred to himself as a “African in Honduras,” rather than an African Honduran. Bowman grew frustrated with Western medical therapies for his own ailments, such as hypertension, diabetes, impotency, and vision loss, and went to a Mexican herbalist called Alfredo Cortez, who reported that he was dead.
Bowman then founded his own healing practice in Honduras. He invented a procedure he dubbed “African Bio-Electric Cell Food Therapy,” which he believed could heal a number of diseases, including cancer and AIDS, as well as neurological ailments and mental illnesses. He also created herbal items that were connected to his work.
Bowman founded a center near La Ceiba, Honduras, in the 1980s and distributed his herbal products in the United States. He named his center the USHA Research Institute, after the village of Usha where it was established.

Bowman and his partner Pablo Medina Gamboa were arrested on money laundering charges on May 28, 2016, at the Juan Manuel Galvez de Roatan Airport, after they were discovered holding $37,000 in cash with no reason. They were seeking to move planes from a passenger airline in the United States to a private plane bound for Honduras.
On June 6, 2016, Bowman was released pending a court hearing, but the Public Ministerio re-arrested him on money laundering charges. He was detained in a Honduran jail for several weeks while his relatives tried to secure his release. He became ill and was taken to the hospital after police officers discovered the seriousness of his illness. Bowman died on the way to Hospital D’Antoni on August 6, 2016, from pneumonia complications. His death may have been hastened by the length of his imprisonment and the bad state of the prison.
