Born in New York City but raised in Knoxville, Benami initially started to sharpen her vocal abilities by singing at school and church events. Benami moved in with her uncle at age 14, saddened by the continuous, harmful friction between her Israeli father and German-American mother, and took a minimum pay day to save enough for college. Despite the turbulence, Benami persevered and took guitar, finally heading for University of Belmont (a renowned music school in Nashville).
At Belmont, Benami immediately struck a close friendship with Rebecca Joy Lear, an emerging songwriter. “I wrote poems for a long time, but Rebecca inspired me to begin to write songs,” Benami explains. The two eventually became housemates and employees, but Lear ended his life later that year with an automobile accident. “It grieved me to the extent that I felt like I couldn’t go with my life after Rebecca died,” recalls Benami. “It took me a long time to come together and find out what to do next.”
Benami finally held college and moved to Los Angeles, where she pushed herself back into music and joined together with a number of songwriters and producers. In 2009, she auditioned for the ninth season of American Idol and finished 10th. Following the round-trip on the lecture circuits, Benami separated from the media frenzy and took time to polish her songcraft after being shown on The Late show With David Letterman, The Today Show and The Ellen DeGeneres Show.
“I wrote the songs people anticipated about me when I first started writing because I’m a blonde country girl from Tennessee,” she recalls. But Benami found herself with a more purposeful and sharper vision for her music after dedicating herself to discovering her songwriting voice and exploring a variety of influences including the Beatles, the legends of Motown like Jimmy Ruffin and Marvin Gaye, Carole King, Mazzy Star and modern singers/songwriters like Sara Bareilles and Ingrid Michaelleson.
Benami teamed forces with Billy Mohler and worked on her first album in 2013 to assist implement this idea. In collaboration with other songwriters such as Jamie Drake, Billy Mohler, Annaliese Schiersch and Jason Gaviati, Benami brought to life Reverie bravely confronting such things as Lear’s death, her fractured relationship with her dad, her disillusionment with the post-Idol, and the painful dissolution of various friendships and romances in recent years.
But although Reverie never fears the depths of grief and desire, the melodies of Benami radiate a sense of infectious hope.
Opening with the gently eerie “Trouble,” Reverie is swiftly sweeping listeners onto the guitar-led alt-pop, which is rich and bright yet unmistakably emotional. While the album offers its share in love tracks (such the sweetly playful “Heartstrings” and the sweeping and sultry “Till I Find You,” at the very core of it are tracks such as “Lost at Sea” and “Release Me” (a midtempo number whose moody guitar work and uneasy harmonies capture the darkly charged drama of her childhood).
With tunes such as “Shine,” an automatic anthem and “Recover,” Reverie ends with “Hummingbird,” a melodic and beautiful piece which reflects the centre of the Benami album. “‘Hummingbird’ is to feel lost and not know what’s next, but to find strength and decide to shoot it anyhow,” she explains, points out that the initial inspiration was an actual cockbird she observed attempting to fly.
Benami wishes to identify and reflect on the dark moments of her past while moving on in a brighter future with the release of Reverie, which she financed out-of-pocket and with the support of a hugely successful pledge music campaign. “One of my aims in general with my music is to keep the spirit of Rebecca alive to respect what she wants to achieve and to encourage me to do,” she said.
