Denver Broncos Wiki/Bio
The Denver Broncos are a Denver-based professional American football team. The Denver Broncos are a member of the American Football Conference (AFC) West division of the National Football League (NFL). The squad is based in Dove Valley, Colorado, and plays its home games at Denver’s Empower Field at Mile High.
The team was founded in 1960 as a charter member of the American Football League (AFL), and in 1970 it merged with the NFL. The Broncos are owned by Pat Bowlen’s estate and play their home games at Empower Field at Mile High (it was previously known as Invesco Field at Mile High from 2001 to 2010).
During their 10-year career in the AFL and their first seven years in the NFL, the Broncos were barely competitive.
It wasn’t until 1973 that they had a winning season. They qualified for the playoffs for the first time in team history in 1977, four years later, and progressed to Super Bowl XII. The Broncos have been one of the most successful teams in the NFL since 1975, with only eleven losses. Together with the New England Patriots, they hold the NFL record for most Super Bowl defeats (5).
John Elway, Floyd Little, Shannon Sharpe, Gary Zimmerman, Terrell Davis, Champ Bailey, and Steve Atwater, as well as late club owner Pat Bowlen, are all members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Peyton Manning (who won two AFC Championships, Super Bowl 50, and an NFC Championship) will be the quarterback in 2021. When minor league baseball owner Bob Howsam was awarded an American Football League (AFL) charter club on August 14, 1959, the Denver Broncos were born.
On September 9, 1960, the Broncos defeated the Boston Patriots 13–10 in the first-ever AFL game. They were the first AFL team to defeat an NFL squad seven years later, on August 5, 1967, when they defeated the Detroit Lions 13–7 in a playoff game. In 1965, Denver was on the verge of losing its franchise until a local ownership group took over and rebuilt the team.
Due to his signing in 1967 and his Pro Bowl heroics on and off the field, the team’s first superstar, “Franchise” Floyd Little, was essential in keeping the team in Denver. The Broncos were also the only original AFL team to never compete in a championship game. John Ralston, a former Stanford University coach, was hired as the Broncos’ head coach in 1972.
After Denver’s first winning season (7–5–2) in 1973, he was named the AFC Coach of the Year by the United Press International. Ralston led the Broncos to three winning seasons in his five seasons with the franchise. Ralston finished the 1976 season with a 9–5 record, but the squad, as in Ralston’s previous success, was unable to repeat the feat.
Bowl appearance in Super Bowl X Gerald Phipps, who bought the Broncos from founding owner Bob Howsam in May 1961, sold the franchise to Canadian investor Edgar Kaiser Jr., grandson of shipbuilding industrialist Henry J. Kaiser, in 1981. Pat Bowlen bought the franchise in 1984, transferring ownership to a family trust before 2004 and remaining in day-to-day control until his fight with A.I.
When Dan Reeves joined the Broncos as vice president and head coach in 1981, he became the NFL’s youngest head coach. Quarterback John Elway was acquired in a trade in 1983 after playing collegiate football at Stanford. Elway, who was picked first overall by the Baltimore Colts, declared that he would forego football in favour of baseball.
During their 12-year partnership, Reeves and Elway led the Broncos to six postseason appearances, five AFC West division crowns, three AFC championships, and three Super Bowl appearances. The Broncos were defeated by the New York Giants in Super Bowl XXI, the Washington Redskins in Super Bowl XXII, and the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl XXIV.
The latter score remains the Super Bowl’s most lopsided scoring differential. Due to Reeves taking over play-calling duties after ousting Elway’s favourite offensive coordinator Mike Shanahan after the 1991 season, as well as Reeves drafting quarterback Tommy Maddox out of UCLA instead of a wide receiver to assist Elway, the final year of the Reeves-Elway era was marked by feuding. Mike Shanahan, who had previously served as the Broncos’ offensive coordinator under Reeves, was rehired as head coach in 1995.
Terrell Davis, a rookie running back, was drafted by Shanahan. With a 13–3 record, the Broncos were the top seed in the AFC in 1996, dominating most of the teams. The Broncos were stunned 30–27 by the fifth-seeded Jacksonville Jaguars in the divisional round of the playoffs.
Elway and Davis were instrumental in the Broncos’ first Super Bowl victory, a 31–24 victory over the defending champion Green Bay Packers in Super Bowl XXXII in 1997. Davis carried for 157 yards and a Super Bowl-record three touchdowns despite Elway completing only 13 of 22 throws, tossing one interception and no touchdowns.
